But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
Maar dit was so, toe Sanballat gehoor het dat ons die muur bou, dat hy toornig was, en baie vererg, en die Jode bespot het.

And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?
En hy het voor sy broers en die leër van Samaría gespreek, en gesê, Wat doen hierdie magtelose Jode? sal hulle hulleself versterk? sal hulle offer? sal hulle dit in een dag klaar maak? sal hulle die klippe lewendig maak uit die hope van die rommel wat verbrand is?

Now Tobiah the Ammonite [was] by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.
Nou was Tobía die Ammoniet by hom, en hy het gesê, Selfs dit wat hulle bou, as ’n jakkals daarop opklim, sal hy hulle klipmuur omgooi.

Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
Hoor, o onse God; want ons is verag: en keer hulle smaad op hulle eie hoof, en gee hulle as ‚'n prooi in die land van ballingskap:

And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked [thee] to anger before the builders.
En moenie hulle ongeregtigheid bedek nie, en laat hulle sonde nie uitgewis word voor jou aangesig nie: want hulle het U geterg voor die bouers.

So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
So het ons dan die muur gebou; en die hele muur is aaneengesluit tot by die helfte daarvan: want die volk het ‚'n hart om te werk gehad.

But it came to pass, [that] when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, [and] that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
Maar dit was so, toe Sanballat, en Tobía, en die Arabiere, en die Ammoniete, en die Asdodiëte, gehoor het dat die mure van Jérusalem opgemaak was, en dat die bresse begin toe te maak is, dat hulle baie toornig was,

And conspired all of them together to come [and] to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
En almal saam saamgesweer het om te kom en teen Jérusalem te veg, en dit te hinder.

Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
Nogtans het ons tot onse God gebid, en ’n wag teen hulle dag en nag gestel, vanweë hulle.

And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and [there is] much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
En Juda het gesê, Die krag van die lasdraers is verswak, en daar is baie rommel; sodat ons nie in staat is om aan die muur te bou nie.

And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
En ons teëstanders het gesê, Hulle sal nie weet, en nie sien nie, totdat ons in hulle midde kom, en hulle doodmaak, en die werk laat ophou.

And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us [they will be upon you].
En dit was so, toe die Jode wat by hulle gewoon het, gekom het, dat hulle ons tien maal gesê het, Van alle plekke vanwaar julle na ons terugkeer sal hulle teen julle wees.

Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, [and] on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
Daarom het ek in die laer plekke agter die muur, en op die hoë plekke, die volk volgens hulle families gestel met hulle swaarde, hulle spiese, en hulle boë.
14
And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, [which is] great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
En ek het gekyk, en opgestaan, en tot die edeles, en tot die heersers, en tot die rest van die volk gesê, Wees nie bevrees vir hulle nie: dink aan die Here, wat groot en vreeslik is, en veg vir julle broers, julle seuns, en julle dogters, julle vroue, en julle huise.

And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
En dit was so, toe ons vyande gehoor het dat dit aan ons bekend was, en God hulle raad tot niet gemaak het, dat ons almal na die muur teruggekeer het, elkeen tot sy werk.

And it came to pass from that time forth, [that] the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers [were] behind all the house of Judah.
En dit was so van daardie tyd af, dat die helfte van my dienaars aan die werk gewerk het, en die ander helfte van hulle het die spiese, die skilde, en die boë, en die pantsers, vasgehou; en die heersers was agter die hele huis van Juda.

They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, [every one] with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other [hand] held a weapon.
Dié wat aan die muur gebou het, en dié wat die laste gedra het, met dié wat opgelaai het, elkeen met een van sy hande het aan die werk gewerk, en met die ander hand het hy ’n wapen vasgehou.

For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and [so] builded. And he that sounded the trumpet [was] by me.
Want die bouers, elkeen het sy swaard aan sy sy vasgemaak, en so gebou. En hy wat die trompet geblaas het, was by my.
19
And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work [is] great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
En ek het tot die edeles, en tot die heersers, en tot die rest van die volk gesê, Die werk is groot en uitgebreid, en ons is op die muur ver van mekaar geskei:

In what place [therefore] ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
In watter plek julle ook al die geluid van die trompet hoor, kom julle daarheen by ons: onse God sal vir ons veg.
21
So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
So het ons dan aan die werk gewerk: en die helfte van hulle het die spiese vasgehou van die opgaan van die môre af totdat die sterre verskyn het.
22
Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
Net so op dieselfde tyd het ek tot die volk gesê, Laat elkeen met sy dienaar binne-in Jérusalem oornag, dat hulle in die nag ’n wag vir ons mag wees, en in die dag aan die werk.

So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, [saving that] every one put them off for washing.
So het ek dan, of my broers, of my dienaars, of die manne van die wag wat my gevolg het, nie ons klere uitgetrek nie, behalwe dat elkeen hulle vir was afgelê het.
