In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

In daardie dae het Johannes die Doper gekom, en in die wildernis van Judea gepreek,

And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

En gesê, Bekeer julle: want die koninkryk van die hemele is naby.

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Want dit is hy van wie deur die profeet Jesaja gespreek is, sê, Die stem van een wat roep in die wildernis, Berei die weg van die Here, maak sy paaie reguit.

And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

En dieselfde Johannes het klere van kameelhaar gehad, en ’n leergordel om sy lendene; en sy voedsel was sprinkane en wilde heuning.

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

Toe het Jérusalem, en die hele Judea, en die hele streek rondom die Jordaan, na hom uitgegaan,

And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

En is deur hom in die Jordaan gedoop, terwyl hulle hulle sondes bely het.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Maar toe hy baie van die Fariseërs en Sadduseërs sien kom tot sy doop, het hy tot hulle gesê, o geslag van adders, wie het julle gewaarsku om te vlug van die komende toorn?

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

Bring daarom vrugte voort wat by die bekering pas:

And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

En dink nie by julleself om te sê, Ons het Abraham as vader nie: want ek sê vir julle dat God uit hierdie klippe kinders vir Abraham kan opwek.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

En nou is die byl ook al by die wortel van die bome gelê: daarom word elke boom wat nie goeie vrug voortbring nie, afgekap, en in die vuur gegooi.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and [with] fire:

Ek doop julle wel met water tot bekering: maar Hy wat ná my kom is magtiger as ek, wie se skoene ek nie waardig is om te dra nie: Hy sal julle doop met die Heilige Gees, en met vuur:

Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Wie se wan is in sy hand, en Hy sal sy dorsvloer deeglik skoonmaak, en sy koring in die skuur bymekaarmaak; maar die kaf sal Hy met onuitblusbare vuur verbrand.

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

Toe het Jesus van Galilea na die Jordaan gekom tot Johannes, om deur hom gedoop te word.

But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

Maar Johannes het Hom teëgestaan, sê, Ek het nodig om deur U gedoop te word, en kom U tot my?

15

And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it to be so] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

En Jesus het geantwoord en tot hom gesê, Laat dit nou so wees: want so pas dit ons om alle geregtigheid te vervul. Toe het hy Hom toegelaat.

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

En Jesus, toe Hy gedoop is, het dadelik uit die water opgeklim: en kyk, die hemele is vir Hom oopgemaak, en Hy het die Gees van God sien neerdaal soos ’n duif, en op Hom kom:

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

En kyk ’n stem uit die hemele, sê, Dit is my geliefde Seun, in wie ek behae het.
