Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
Nou in die vyftiende jaar van die regering van Tiberius César, toe Pontius Pilatus goewerneur van Judea was, en Herodes viervors van Galilea, en sy broer Filippus viervors van Itureä en van die streek van Trachonítis, en Lisánias die viervors van Abiléne,

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Annas en Kajafas synde die hoëpriesters, het die woord van God tot Johannes die seun van Sagaría in die wildernis gekom.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
En hy het gekom in die hele omtrek van die Jordaan, en die doop van bekering tot vergifnis van sondes gepreek;
4
As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Soos geskrywe is in die boek van die woorde van Jesaja die profeet, sê, Die stem van een wat roep in die wildernis, Berei die weg van die Here, maak sy paaie reguit.

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways [shall be] made smooth;
Elke dal sal opgevul word, en elke berg en heuwel sal verneder word; en die kromme sal reguit gemaak word, en die rowwe weë sal glad gemaak word;

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
En alle vlees sal die heil van God sien.
7
Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Toe het hy tot die skare gesê wat uitgegaan het om deur hom gedoop te word, o geslag van adders, wie het julle gewaarsku om te vlug van die komende toorn?
8
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
Bring daarom vrugte voort wat by die bekering pas, en begin nie by julleself te sê, Ons het Abraham as vader nie: want ek sê vir julle, Dat God uit hierdie klippe kinders vir Abraham kan opwek.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
En nou is die byl ook al by die wortel van die bome gelê: elke boom daarom wat nie goeie vrug voortbring nie, word afgekap, en in die vuur gegooi.

And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
En die skare het hom gevra, sê, Wat moet ons dan doen?
11
He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
Hy het geantwoord en tot hulle gesê, Hy wat twee rokke het, laat hom deel met hom wat nie het nie; en hy wat voedsel het, laat hom net so doen.
12
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
Toe het daar ook tollenaars gekom om gedoop te word, en tot hom gesê, Meester, wat moet ons doen?
13
And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
En hy het tot hulle gesê, Eis nie meer as dit wat vir julle bepaal is nie.
14
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse [any] falsely; and be content with your wages.
En die soldate het hom ook gevra, sê, En wat moet ons doen? En hy het tot hulle gesê, Doen niemand geweld aan nie, en beskuldig niemand valslik nie; en wees tevrede met julle soldy.

And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
En soos die volk in verwagting was, en almal in hulle harte aangaande Johannes geredeneer het, of hy miskien die Christus was;
16
John answered, saying unto [them] all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
Het Johannes hulle almal geantwoord, sê, Ek doop julle wel met water; maar een magtiger as ek kom, die riem van wie se skoene ek nie waardig is om los te maak nie: Hy sal julle doop met die Heilige Gees en met vuur:

Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
Wie se wan is in sy hand, en Hy sal sy dorsvloer deeglik skoonmaak, en die koring in sy skuur bymekaarmaak; maar die kaf sal Hy met onuitblusbare vuur verbrand.

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
En baie ander dinge het hy in sy vermaning tot die volk gepreek.
19
But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
Maar Herodes die viervors, omdat hy deur hom verwyt is aangaande Herodias sy broer Filippus se vrou, en vir al die booshede wat Herodes gedoen het,
20
Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
Het nog dit by al die ander gevoeg, dat hy Johannes in die gevangenis opgesluit het.
21
Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
Nou toe al die volk gedoop is, het dit gebeur, dat Jesus ook gedoop is, en bidende, is die hemel oopgemaak,
22
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
En die Heilige Gees het in ’n liggaamlike gestalte soos ’n duif op Hom neergedaal, en ’n stem het uit die hemel gekom, wat gesê het, Jy is my geliefde Seun; in jou het ek behae.

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was [the son] of Heli,
En Jesus self het begin om omtrent dertig jaar oud te wees, synde (soos gemeen is) die seun van Josef, wat was die seun van Eli,

Which was [the son] of Matthat, which was [the son] of Levi, which was [the son] of Melchi, which was [the son] of Janna, which was [the son] of Joseph,
Wat was die seun van Mattat, wat was die seun van Levi, wat was die seun van Melgi, wat was die seun van Janna, wat was die seun van Josef,

Which was [the son] of Mattathias, which was [the son] of Amos, which was [the son] of Naum, which was [the son] of Esli, which was [the son] of Nagge,
Wat was die seun van Mattatías, wat was die seun van Amos, wat was die seun van Nahum, wat was die seun van Esli, wat was die seun van Naggai,
