And it came to pass, when all the kings which [were] on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard [thereof];
En dit het gebeur, toe al die konings wat aan hierdie kant van die Jordaan was, in die heuwels, en in die valleie, en in al die kusse van die groot see teenoor die Líbanon, die Hetiet, en die Amoriet, die Kanaäniet, die Feresiet, die Hewiet, en die Jebusiet, dit gehoor het;

That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
Dat hulle bymekaargekom het om met een verstand teen Josua en teen Israel te veg.

And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
En toe die inwoners van Gibeon hoor wat Josua aan Jérigo en aan Ai gedoen het,
4
They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
Het hulle ook met listigheid gehandel, en gegaan, en hulleself as boodskappers voorgedoen, en ou sakke op hulle esels geneem, en wynsakke, oud, en gebars, en gebind;

And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry [and] mouldy.
En ou skoene en gevlek op hulle voete, en ou klere op hulle; en al die brood van hulle prooi was droog en muf.

And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
En hulle het na Josua gegaan na die kamp by Gilgal, en tot hom en tot die manne van Israel gesê, Ons kom van ’n ver land: maak nou dus ’n verbond met ons.

And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
En die manne van Israel het tot die Hewiete gesê, Miskien woon julle onder ons; en hoe sal ons ’n verbond met julle maak?
8
And they said unto Joshua, We [are] thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who [are] ye? and from whence come ye?
En hulle het tot Josua gesê, Ons is jou dienaars. En Josua het tot hulle gesê, Wie is julle? en waarvandaan kom julle?
9
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
En hulle het tot hom gesê, Van ’n baie ver land het jou dienaars gekom vanweë die Naam van die HERE jou God: want ons het die roem van Hom gehoor, en alles wat Hy in Egipte gedoen het,

And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that [were] beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which [was] at Ashtaroth.
En alles wat Hy aan die twee konings van die Amoriete gedoen het, wat aan die ander kant van die Jordaan was, aan Síhon koning van Hesbon, en aan Og koning van Basan, wat in Astarot was.

Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We [are] your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
Daarom het ons ouderlinge en al die inwoners van ons land tot ons gesê, Neem prooi met julle vir die pad, en gaan hulle tegemoet, en sê tot hulle, Ons is julle dienaars: maak dus nou ’n verbond met ons.

This our bread we took hot [for] our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:
Hierdie ons brood het ons warm uit ons huise geneem as prooi op die dag toe ons uitgegaan het om na julle te kom; maar nou, kyk, dit is droog, en dit is muf:

And these bottles of wine, which we filled, [were] new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
En hierdie wynsakke, wat ons nuut gevul het, kyk, hulle is gebars: en hierdie ons klere en ons skoene het oud geword vanweë die baie lang pad.

And the men took of their victuals, and asked not [counsel] at the mouth of the LORD.
En die manne het van hulle prooi geneem, en het die mond van die HERE nie gevra nie.
15
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.
En Josua het vrede met hulle gemaak, en ‚'n verbond met hulle aangegaan om hulle te laat lewe: en die vorste van die vergadering het hulle met ‚'n eed besweer.
16
And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they [were] their neighbours, and [that] they dwelt among them.
En dit het gebeur aan die end van drie dae nadat hulle ‚'n verbond met hulle gemaak het, dat hulle gehoor het dat hulle hulle bure was, en dat hulle onder hulle gewoon het.

And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities [were] Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.
En die kinders van Israel het opgetrek, en op die derde dag by hulle stede gekom. Nou was hulle stede Gibeon, en Kefira, en Beërot, en Kirjat-Jeárim.

And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
En die kinders van Israel het hulle nie verslaan nie, omdat die vorste van die vergadering hulle met ‚'n eed by die HERE, die God van Israel, besweer het. En die hele vergadering het teen die vorste gemurmureer.
19
But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
Maar al die vorste het tot die hele vergadering gesê, Ons het hulle met ’n eed by die HERE, die God van Israel, besweer: nou dan, ons mag hulle nie aanraak nie.
20
This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.
Dit sal ons aan hulle doen; ons sal hulle laat lewe, dat daar nie toorn op ons kom vanweë die eed wat ons hulle gesweer het nie.
21
And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
En die vorste het tot hulle gesê, Laat hulle lewe; maar laat hulle houtkappers en waterputters wees vir die hele vergadering; soos die vorste hulle beloof het.
22
And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We [are] very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
En Josua het hulle geroep, en tot hulle gespreek, en gesê, Waarom het julle ons bedrieg, en gesê, Ons is baie ver van julle; terwyl julle onder ons woon?

Now therefore ye [are] cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.
Nou dan, is julle vervloek, en daar sal niemand van julle ophou om diensknegte te wees nie, en houtkappers, en waterputters vir die huis van my God.
24
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
En hulle het Josua geantwoord, en gesê, Omdat daar sekerlik aan jou dienaars vertel is hoe die HERE jou God Moses sy dienaar beveel het om julle die hele land te gee, en om al die inwoners van die land voor julle uit te vernietig, daarom was ons baie bevrees vir ons siele vanweë julle, en het hierdie ding gedoen.

And now, behold, we [are] in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.
En nou, kyk, ons is in jou hand: soos dit goed en reg is in jou oë om aan ons te doen, doen so.
26
And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.
En so het hy aan hulle gedoen, en hulle gered uit die hand van die kinders van Israel, dat hulle hulle nie doodgemaak het nie.
27
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
En Josua het hulle daardie dag houtkappers en waterputters gemaak vir die vergadering, en vir die altaar van die HERE, selfs tot vandag toe, in die plek wat Hy sou uitkies.
