But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
Maar die kinders van Israel het ‚'n oortreding begaan in die ban-ding: want Agan, die seun van Karmi, die seun van Sabdi, die seun van Serag, van die stam van Juda, het van die ban-ding geneem: en die toorn van die HERE is aangesteek teen die kinders van Israel.

And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which [is] beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
En Josua het manne van Jérigo na Ai gestuur, wat by Bet-Áwen is, aan die oostekant van Bet-el, en tot hulle gespreek, en gesê, Trek op en verken die land. En die manne het opgetrek en Ai verken.

And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; [and] make not all the people to labour thither; for they [are but] few.
En hulle het na Josua teruggekeer, en tot hom gesê, Laat nie die hele volk optrek nie; maar laat omtrent twee of drieduisend man optrek en Ai verslaan; moenie die hele volk daarheen laat arbei nie; want hulle is min.

So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
So het daar dan van die volk omtrent drieduisend man daarheen opgetrek: maar hulle het voor die manne van Ai gevlug.

And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them [from] before the gate [even] unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
En die manne van Ai het omtrent ses en dertig man van hulle neergeslaan: want hulle het hulle agtervolg van voor die poort af tot by Sebarim, en hulle op die afdraande verslaan: daarom het die harte van die volk wegsmelt, en soos water geword.

And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
En Josua het sy klere geskeur, en op sy aangesig voor die ark van die HERE tot die aand toe neergeval, hy en die ouderlinge van Israel, en stof op hulle hoofde gegooi.

And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
En Josua het gesê, Ag, Here HERE, waarom het U hierdie volk ooit oor die Jordaan laat trek, om ons in die hand van die Amoriete oor te gee, om ons te vernietig? Ag, dat ons tevrede was, en aan hierdie kant van die Jordaan gebly het!

O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
O Here, wat moet ek sê, wanneer Israel voor sy vyande die rug draai?

For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear [of it], and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
Want die Kanaäniete en al die inwoners van die land sal dit hoor, en ons omsingel, en ons naam van die aarde afsny: en wat sal U dan vir u groot Naam doen?

And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
En die HERE het tot Josua gesê, Staan op; waarom lê jy so op jou aangesig?

Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put [it] even among their own stuff.
Israel het gesondig, en hulle het ook my verbond oortree wat ek hulle beveel het: want hulle het selfs van die ban-ding geneem, en ook gesteel, en ook gelieg, en dit ook onder hulle eie goed gesit.

Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, [but] turned [their] backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
Daarom kon die kinders van Israel nie voor hulle vyande standhou nie, maar het die rug voor hulle vyande gedraai, omdat hulle onder die ban was: en ek sal nie meer met julle wees nie, tensy julle die ban-ding uit julle midde uitroei.

Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, [There is] an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
Staan op, heilig die volk, en sê, Heilig julle self teen môre: want so sê die HERE, die God van Israel, Daar is ’n ban-ding in jou midde, o Israel: jy kan nie voor jou vyande standhou nie, totdat julle die ban-ding uit julle midde wegneem.

In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, [that] the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families [thereof]; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.
In die môre moet julle dus nader kom volgens julle stamme: en dit moet wees, dat die stam wat die HERE gryp, nader moet kom volgens die families; en die familie wat die HERE gryp, moet nader kom volgens die huise; en die huis wat die HERE gryp, moet nader kom man vir man.

And it shall be, [that] he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
En dit moet wees, dat hy wat met die ban-ding gegryp word, met vuur verbrand moet word, hy en alles wat hy het: omdat hy die verbond van die HERE oortree het, en omdat hy dwaasheid in Israel gedoen het.

So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
So het Josua dan vroeg in die môre opgestaan, en Israel nader gebring volgens hulle stamme; en die stam van Juda is gegryp:
17
And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
En hy het die familie van Juda nader gebring; en hy het die familie van die Seragiete gegryp: en hy het die familie van die Seragiete man vir man nader gebring; en Sabdi is gegryp:

And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
En hy het sy huis man vir man nader gebring; en Agan, die seun van Karmi, die seun van Sabdi, die seun van Serag, van die stam van Juda, is gegryp.

And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide [it] not from me.
En Josua het tot Agan gesê, My seun, gee, ek bid jou, eer aan die HERE, die God van Israel, en doen belydenis aan Hom; en sê my nou wat jy gedoen het; verberg dit nie vir my nie.

And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
En Agan het Josua geantwoord, en gesê, Waarlik, ek het gesondig teen die HERE, die God van Israel, en so en so het ek gedoen:

When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they [are] hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
Toe ek onder die prooi gesien het ‚'n mooi Babiloniese kleed, en tweehonderd sikkels silwer, en ‚'n goue tong van vyftig sikkels gewig, toe het ek dit begeer, en dit geneem; en kyk, dit is weggesteek in die aarde in die midde van my tent, en die silwer daaronder.

So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, [it was] hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
So het Josua dan boodskappers gestuur, en hulle het na die tent gehardloop; en kyk, dit was verborge in sy tent, en die silwer daaronder.

And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
En hulle het dit uit die midde van die tent geneem, en dit na Josua gebring, en na al die kinders van Israel, en dit voor die HERE neergesit.
24
And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
En Josua, en die hele Israel saam met hom, het Agan die seun van Serag geneem, en die silwer, en die kleed, en die goue tong, en sy seuns, en sy dogters, en sy osse, en sy esels, en sy skape, en sy tent, en alles wat hy gehad het: en hulle het hulle opgebring na die dal Agor.

And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
En Josua het gesê, Waarom het jy ons in die moeilikheid gebring? die HERE sal jou vandag in die moeilikheid bring. En die hele Israel het hom gestenig met klippe, en hulle met vuur verbrand, nadat hulle hulle met klippe gestenig het.

And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
En hulle het ‚'n groot hoop klippe oor hom opgehoop tot vandag toe. So is die HERE dan afgewend van die grimmigheid van sy toorn. Daarom is die naam van daardie plek tot vandag toe die dal Agor genoem.
