1
Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be [any] that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.
Hardloop julle heen en weer deur die strate van Jérusalem, en sien nou, en ken, en soek in die breë plekke daarvan, of julle ’n man kan vind, of daar iemand is wat oordeel doen, wat die waarheid soek; en ek sal dit vergewe.

And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.
En alhoewel hulle sê, Die HERE lewe; sekerlik sweer hulle vals.

O LORD, [are] not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, [but] they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
O HERE, is u oë nie op die waarheid nie? U het hulle geslaan, maar hulle het nie smart gehad nie; U het hulle verteer, maar hulle het geweier om die tugtiging te ontvang: hulle het hulle aangesigte harder gemaak as ’n rots; hulle het geweier om terug te keer.

Therefore I said, Surely these [are] poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, [nor] the judgment of their God.
Daarom het ek gesê, Sekerlik is hierdie arm; hulle is dwaas: want hulle ken nie die weg van die HERE nie, en die oordeel van hulle God nie.

I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, [and] the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, [and] burst the bonds.
Ek sal na die groot manne gaan, en met hulle praat; want hulle het die weg van die HERE geken, en die oordeel van hulle God: maar hierdie het almal die juk saam verbreek, en die bande losgemaak.

Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, [and] a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, [and] their backslidings are increased.
Daarom sal ‚'n leeu uit die woud hulle doodslaan, ‚'n wolf van die aande sal hulle verwoes, ‚'n luiperd sal oor hulle stede waak: elkeen wat daaruit gaan, sal verskeur word: omdat hulle oortredings baie is, en hulle afkerighede vermeerder is.

How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by [them that are] no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
Hoe sal ek jou hiervoor vergewe? jou kinders het My verlaat, en by dié gesweer wat geen gode is nie: toe ek hulle tot die volle versadig het, het hulle geëgbreek, en by die huise van hoere bymekaargekom.

They were [as] fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.
Hulle was soos vet gespande perde in die môre: elkeen het na sy naaste se vrou gehuil.

Shall I not visit for these [things]? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
Sal ek nie hierdie dinge besoek nie? sê die HERE: en sal my siel nie op so ’n nasie gewreek word nie?
10
Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they [are] not the LORD’S.
Trek op op haar mure, en vernietig; maar maak nie ‚'n volle einde nie: neem weg haar takke; want hulle is nie die HERE s‚'n nie.
11
For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.
Want die huis van Israel en die huis van Juda het baie bedrieglik met My gehandel, sê die HERE.
12
They have belied the LORD, and said, [It is] not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
Hulle het die HERE verloën, en gesê, Dit is nie Hy nie; en die kwaad sal nie oor ons kom nie; en ons sal nie die swaard of die hongersnood sien nie:
13
And the prophets shall become wind, and the word [is] not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
En die profete sal wind word, en die woord is nie in hulle nie: so sal dit met hulle gebeur.
14
Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
Daarom so sê die HERE God van leërskare, Omdat julle hierdie woord spreek, kyk, ek sal my woorde in jou mond vuur maak, en hierdie volk hout, en dit sal hulle verteer.

Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it [is] a mighty nation, it [is] an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
Kyk, ek sal ’n nasie van ver af oor julle bring, o huis van Israel, sê die HERE: dit is ’n magtige nasie, dit is ’n ou nasie, ’n nasie wie se taal jy nie ken nie, en ook nie verstaan wat hulle sê nie.

Their quiver [is] as an open sepulchre, they [are] all mighty men.
Hulle pylkoker is soos ‚'n oop graf, hulle is almal magtige manne.
17
And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, [which] thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
En hulle sal jou oes en jou brood opeet, wat jou seuns en jou dogters moet eet: hulle sal jou troppe en jou kuddes opeet: hulle sal jou wingerde en jou vyebome opeet: hulle sal jou versterkte stede, waarin jy vertrou, met die swaard verarm.

Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
Nogtans in daardie dae, sê die HERE, sal ek nie ’n volle einde met julle maak nie.
19
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these [things] unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land [that is] not yours.
En dit sal gebeur, wanneer julle sal sê, Waarom doen die HERE onse God al hierdie dinge aan ons? dan sal jy hulle antwoord, Soos julle My verlaat het, en vreemde gode in julle land gedien het, so sal julle vreemdelinge dien in ’n land wat nie julle s’n is nie.

Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
Verklaar dit in die huis van Jakob, en publiseer dit in Juda, sê,
21
Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
Hoor nou dit, o dwase volk, en sonder verstand; wat oë het, en sien nie; wat ore het, en hoor nie:
22
Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand [for] the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
Vrees julle My nie? sê die HERE: sal julle nie bewe by my teenwoordigheid nie, wat die sand as die grens van die see gestel het by ’n ewige dekreet, dat dit dit nie kan oorgaan nie: en alhoewel die golwe daarvan storm, tog kan hulle nie seëvier nie; alhoewel hulle bruis, tog kan hulle dit nie oorgaan nie?

But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
Maar hierdie volk het ‚'n afvallige en opstandige hart; hulle is afgewyk, en weggegaan.
24
Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
En hulle sê nie in hulle hart nie, Laat ons nou die HERE onse God vrees, wat reën gee, beide die vroeë en die laat reën, in sy seisoen: Hy bewaar vir ons die aangewese weke van die oes.

Your iniquities have turned away these [things], and your sins have withholden good [things] from you.
Julle ongeregtighede het hierdie dinge afgewend, en julle sondes het die goeie van julle weerhou.
26
For among my people are found wicked [men]: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
Want onder my volk word goddelose manne gevind: hulle lê en loer, soos hy wat strikke sit; hulle sit ’n valstrik, hulle vang mense.
27
As a cage is full of birds, so [are] their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
Soos ’n hok vol is van voëls, so is hulle huise vol van bedrog: daarom is hulle groot geword, en ryk geword.
28
They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
Hulle is vet geword, hulle blink: ja, hulle oortref die dade van die goddelose: hulle oordeel nie die saak nie, die saak van die wees, tog voorspoed hulle; en die reg van die behoeftiges oordeel hulle nie.

Shall I not visit for these [things]? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
Sal ek nie hierdie dinge besoek nie? sê die HERE: sal my siel nie op so ’n nasie gewreek word nie?
30
A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;
‚'n Wonderlike en afskuwelike ding is in die land gepleeg;
31
The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love [to have it] so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
Die profete profeteer vals, en die priesters heers deur hulle middele; en my volk het dit so lief: en wat sal julle doen in die einde daarvan?
