1
From whence [come] wars and fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your lusts that war in your members?
Van waar kom twiste en gevegte onder julle? Kom hulle nie hiervandaan, selfs van julle luste wat in julle lede stry nie?
2
Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Julle begeer, en het nie: julle doodslaan, en begeer om te hê, en kan nie verkry nie: julle veg en maak oorlog, tog het julle nie, omdat julle nie vra nie.

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your lusts.
Julle vra, en ontvang nie, omdat julle sleg vra, dat julle dit in julle luste mag bestee.
4
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Julle egbrekers en egbrekeresse, weet julle nie dat die vriendskap van die wêreld vyandskap teen God is nie? elkeen daarom wat ’n vriend van die wêreld wil wees, is die vyand van God.

Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
Dink julle dat die Skrif tevergeefs sê, Die gees wat in ons woon, begeer tot afguns?

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Maar Hy gee meer genade. Daarom sê Hy, God weerstaan die hoogmoediges, maar gee genade aan die nederiges.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Onderwerp julle daarom aan God. Weerstaan die duiwel, en hy sal van julle vlug.
8
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.
Nader tot God, en Hy sal nader tot julle. Reinig julle hande, julle sondaars; en reinig julle harte, julle dubbelhartiges.
9
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness.
Wees ellendig, en treur, en ween: laat julle lag in treur verander, en julle blydskap in neerslagtigheid.
10
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Verneder julle in die sig van die Here, en Hy sal julle verhoog.

Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of [his] brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
Spreek nie kwaad van mekaar nie, broers. Hy wat van sy broer kwaad spreek, en sy broer oordeel, spreek kwaad van die wet, en oordeel die wet: maar as jy die wet oordeel, is jy nie ‚'n dader van die wet nie, maar ‚'n regter.

There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
Daar is een wetgewer, wat in staat is om te red en te vernietig: wie is jy wat ‚'n ander oordeel?

Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
Kom nou, julle wat sê, Vandag of môre sal ons na so ’n stad gaan, en daar ’n jaar lank bly, en koop en verkoop, en wins maak:

Whereas ye know not what [shall be] on the morrow. For what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Terwyl julle nie weet wat môre sal wees nie. Want wat is julle lewe? Dit is selfs ’n damp, wat ’n bietjie tyd verskyn, en dan verdwyn.

For that ye [ought] to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
In plaas daarvan moet julle sê, As die Here wil, sal ons lewe, en dit of dat doen.
16
But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
Maar nou roem julle in julle roemerye: alle sulke roem is boos.
17
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.
Daarom, aan hom wat weet om goed te doen, en dit nie doen nie, aan hom is dit sonde.
