My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons.

My broers, het nie die geloof van onse Here Jesus Christus, die Here van die heerlikheid, met aanneming van persone nie.

For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

Want as daar in julle vergadering ’n man inkom met ’n goue ring, in pragtige kleding, en daar kom ook ’n arme in in vuil kleding;

And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

En julle let op hom wat die pragtige kleding dra, en sê tot hom, Sit jy hier in ’n goeie plek; en sê tot die arme, Staan jy daar, of sit hier onder my voetbank:

Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

Is julle dan nie partydig onder julle self nie, en is geword regters van boos gedagtes?

Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Hoor, my geliefde broers, Het God nie die armes van hierdie wêreld uitverkies, ryk in die geloof, en erfgename van die koninkryk wat Hy beloof het aan hulle wat Hom liefhet nie?

But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

Maar julle het die arme verag. Onderdruk die rykes julle nie, en sleep hulle julle nie voor die regstoele nie?

Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

Belaster hulle nie daardie edele Naam waardeur julle genoem word nie?

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

As julle die koninklike wet volbring volgens die Skrif, Jy moet jou naaste liefhê soos jouself, julle doen goed:

But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

Maar as julle aanneming van persone begaan, julle doen sonde, en word deur die wet as oortreders oortuig.

10

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all.

Want elkeen wat die hele wet hou, en in een punt struikel, is skuldig aan almal.

11

For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

Want Hy wat gesê het, Jy moet nie egbreek nie, het ook gesê, Jy moet nie doodslaan nie. Nou as jy nie egbreek nie, tog doodslaan, is jy ’n oortreder van die wet.

So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

So spreek, en so doen, as dié wat deur die wet van die vryheid geoordeel sal word.

13

For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Want hy sal ’n onbarmhartige oordeel hê wat geen barmhartigheid bewys het nie; en barmhartigheid roem teen die oordeel.

14

What [doth it] profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

Wat baat dit, my broers, as iemand sê hy het geloof, en het nie die werke nie? kan die geloof hom red?

15

If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

As ’n broer of suster naak is, en gebrek het aan daaglikse voedsel,

16

And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be [ye] warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what [doth it] profit?

En een van julle sê tot hulle, Gaan heen in vrede, word warm en versadig; maar julle gee hulle nie die dinge wat vir die liggaam nodig is nie; wat baat dit?

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Selfs so is die geloof, as dit nie werke het nie, dood, op sigself.

18

Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

Ja, iemand mag sê, Jy het geloof, en ek het werke: toon my jou geloof sonder jou werke, en ek sal jou my geloof toon uit my werke.

19

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Jy glo dat daar een God is; jy doen goed: die duiwels glo ook, en sidder.

20

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Maar wil jy weet, o ydele mens, dat die geloof sonder die werke dood is?

21

Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Was Abraham ons vader nie deur werke geregverdig, toe hy Isak sy seun op die altaar geoffer het nie?

22

Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

Sien jy hoe die geloof saam met sy werke gewerk het, en deur die werke is die geloof volmaak gemaak?

23

And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

En die Skrif is vervul wat sê, Abraham het God geglo, en dit is hom tot geregtigheid gereken: en hy is die vriend van God genoem.

24

Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Julle sien dan hoe dat deur werke ’n mens geregverdig word, en nie deur geloof alleen nie.

25

Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent [them] out another way?

Net so ook is die hoer Ragab nie deur werke geregverdig, toe sy die boodskappers ontvang het, en hulle ’n ander pad uitgestuur het nie?

26

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Want soos die liggaam sonder die gees dood is, so is die geloof sonder die werke ook dood.
