1
Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: [there is] no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
Kom af, en sit in die stof, o maagd dogter van Babel, sit op die grond: daar is geen troon nie, o dogter van die Chaldeërs: want jy sal nie meer genoem word teer en delikaat nie.

Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
Neem die meulstene, en maal meel: ontbloot jou hare, maak die voet kaal, ontbloot die dy, trek deur die riviere.

Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet [thee as] a man.
Jou naaktheid sal ontbloot word, ja, jou skaamte sal gesien word: ek sal wraak neem, en ek sal geen mens ontmoet nie.

[As for] our redeemer, the LORD of hosts [is] his name, the Holy One of Israel.
Wat ons Verlosser betref, die HERE van leërskare is sy Naam, die Heilige van Israel.
5
Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.
Sit stil, en gaan in die duisternis, o dogter van die Chaldeërs: want jy sal nie meer die meesteres van koninkryke genoem word nie.

I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.
Ek was toornig op my volk, ek het my erfenis verontreinig, en hulle in jou hand oorgegee: jy het hulle geen barmhartigheid bewys nie; op die bejaarde het jy jou juk baie swaar gemaak.

And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: [so] that thou didst not lay these [things] to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.
En jy het gesê, Ek sal vir ewig ’n meesteres wees: sodat jy hierdie dinge nie ter harte geneem het nie, en ook nie aan die einde daarvan gedink het nie.

Therefore hear now this, [thou that art] given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me; I shall not sit [as] a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
Daarom hoor nou dit, jy wat behae is in behae, wat veilig woon; wat in jou hart sê, Ek is, en niemand anders behalwe my nie; ek sal nie as ’n weduwee sit nie, en ook nie die verlies van kinders ken nie:

But these two [things] shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, [and] for the great abundance of thine enchantments.
Maar hierdie twee dinge sal in ’n oomblik in een dag tot jou kom, die verlies van kinders, en weduweeskap: hulle sal in hulle volheid tot jou kom vanweë die menigte van jou towerye, en vanweë die groot oorvloed van jou betoweringe.

For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me.
Want jy het op jou goddeloosheid vertrou: jy het gesê, Niemand sien my nie. Jou wysheid en jou kennis, dit het jou van die pad afgelei; en jy het in jou hart gesê, Ek is, en niemand anders behalwe my nie.

Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, [which] thou shalt not know.
Daarom sal die kwaad tot jou kom; jy sal nie weet vanwaar dit opstaan nie: en onheil sal op jou val; jy sal nie in staat wees om dit af te weer nie: en vernietiging sal skielik tot jou kom, wat jy nie sal weet nie.

Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
Staan nou met jou betoweringe, en met die menigte van jou towerye, waarin jy van jou jeug af gearbei het; as jy in staat is om te baat, as jy in staat is om te seëvier.

Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [these things] that shall come upon thee.
Jy is moeg geword in die menigte van jou raadgewings. Laat nou die sterrekykers, die sterrewigters, die maandelikse voorspellers, opstaan, en jou red van hierdie dinge wat tot jou sal kom.

Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, [nor] fire to sit before it.
Kyk, hulle sal wees soos stoppels; die vuur sal hulle verteer; hulle sal hulleself nie red uit die mag van die vlam nie: daar sal nie ‚'n kole wees om warm by te word nie, of vuur om voor te sit nie.

Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, [even] thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
So sal hulle vir jou wees met wie jy gearbei het, selfs jou handelaars, van jou jeug af: hulle sal elkeen na sy eie kant dwaal; niemand sal jou red nie.
