1
Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because [there is] no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
Hoor die woord van die HERE, julle kinders van Israel: want die HERE het ‚'n twis met die inwoners van die land, omdat daar geen waarheid, en geen barmhartigheid, en geen kennis van God in die land is nie.

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
Deur te sweer, en te lieg, en te dood, en te steel, en egbreuk te pleeg, hulle breek uit, en bloed raak aan bloed.
3
Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
Daarom sal die land treur, en elkeen wat daarin woon, sal kwyn, met die diere van die veld, en met die voëls van die hemel; ja, die visse van die see sal ook weggeneem word.

Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people [are] as they that strive with the priest.
Tog laat niemand twis, en laat niemand bestraf nie: want jou volk is soos hulle wat met die priester twis.

Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
Daarom sal jy in die dag val, en die profeet sal ook met jou in die nag val, en ek sal jou moeder vernietig.
6
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
My volk is vernietig vanweë gebrek aan kennis: omdat jy die kennis verwerp het, sal ek jou ook verwerp, dat jy geen priester vir My sal wees nie: aangesien jy die wet van jou God vergeet het, sal ek ook jou kinders vergeet.

As they were increased, so they sinned against me: [therefore] will I change their glory into shame.
Soos hulle vermeerder is, so het hulle teen My gesondig: daarom sal ek hulle eer in skande verander.
8
They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
Hulle eet die sonde van my volk, en hulle sit hulle hart op hulle ongeregtigheid.
9
And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.
En daar sal wees, soos die volk, so die priester: en ek sal hulle weë op hulle besoek, en hulle doenings aan hulle vergelde.
10
For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.
Want hulle sal eet, en nie genoeg hê nie: hulle sal die hoer speel, en nie vermeerder nie: omdat hulle opgehou het om ag te gee op die HERE.
11
Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
Hoerery en wyn en nuwe wyn neem die hart weg.

My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused [them] to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.
My volk vra raad by hulle stokke, en hulle staf verklaar aan hulle: want die gees van hoererye het hulle laat dwaal, en hulle het die hoer gespeel van onder hulle God af.

They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof [is] good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.
Hulle offer op die toppe van die berge, en brand wierook op die heuwels, onder eikebome en populierbome en elmbome, omdat die skaduwee daarvan goed is: daarom speel julle dogters die hoer, en julle skoondogters pleeg egbreuk.

I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people [that] doth not understand shall fall.
Ek sal nie julle dogters straf wanneer hulle die hoer speel nie, en ook nie julle skoondogters wanneer hulle egbreuk pleeg nie: want hulleself is afgesonder met hoere, en hulle offer met hoere: daarom sal die volk wat nie verstaan nie, val.

Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, [yet] let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth.
Alhoewel jy, Israel, die hoer speel, laat tog Juda nie oortree nie; en kom nie by Gilgal nie, en gaan ook nie op na Bet-Awen nie, en sweer nie, Die HERE lewe nie.

For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
Want Israel gly terug soos ‚'n terugglippende vers: nou sal die HERE hulle voed soos ‚'n lam in ‚'n groot plek.
17
Ephraim [is] joined to idols: let him alone.
Efraim is by die afgode aangesluit: laat hom met rus.
18
Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers [with] shame do love, Give ye.
Hulle drank is suur; hulle het voortdurend die hoer gespeel: haar heersers het skande met groot behae liefgehad.
19
The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
Die wind het haar in haar vlerke gebind, en hulle sal beskaamd word vanweë hulle offers.
