1
Israel [is] an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images.
Israel is ’n leë wingerdstok, hy bring vrug voort vir homself: volgens die menigte van sy vrug het hy die altare vermeerder; volgens die goedheid van sy land het hulle goeie beelde gemaak.

Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images.
Hulle hart is verdeel; nou sal hulle skuldig bevind word: hy sal hulle altare afbreek, hy sal hulle beelde vernietig.

For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us?
Want nou sal hulle sê, Ons het geen koning nie, omdat ons die HERE nie gevrees het nie; wat sou ’n koning dan vir ons doen?

They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.
Hulle het woorde gespreek, valse eedswure gesweer deur die maak van ‚'n verbond: so sal oordeel uitspruit soos hemlok in die vorwe van die veld.

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof [that] rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.
Die inwoners van Samaría sal bevrees wees vir die kalwers van Bet-Awen: want die volk daarvan sal oor dit treur, en die priesters daarvan wat daaroor gejuig het, vir die heerlikheid daarvan, omdat dit van dit weggegaan is.

It shall be also carried unto Assyria [for] a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.
Dit sal ook na Assirië gebring word vir ’n geskenk aan koning Jareb: Efraim sal skande ontvang, en Israel sal beskaamd word van sy eie raad.

[As for] Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water.
Wat Samaría betref, haar koning is afgesny soos die skuim op die water.

The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.
Die hoë plekke ook van Awen, die sonde van Israel, sal vernietig word: die doring en die distel sal op hulle altare opkom; en hulle sal tot die berge sê, Bedek ons; en tot die heuwels, Val op ons.

O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.
o Israel, jy het gesondig van die dae van Gibea af: daar het hulle gestaan: die geveg in Gibea teen die kinders van ongeregtigheid het hulle nie ingehaal nie.

[It is] in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows.
Dit is in my begeerte dat ek hulle moet tugtig; en die volk sal teen hulle bymekaargemaak word, wanneer hulle hulleself in hulle twee vorwe bind.

And Ephraim [is as] an heifer [that is] taught, [and] loveth to tread out [the corn]; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, [and] Jacob shall break his clods.
En Efraim is soos ‚'n vers wat geleer is, en lief is om te dors; maar ek het oor haar mooi nek gegaan: ek sal Efraim laat ry; Juda sal ploeg, en Jakob sal sy vorwe vir homself breek.

Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for [it is] time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.
Saai vir julle in geregtigheid, oes in barmhartigheid; breek julle braakland: want dit is tyd om die HERE te soek, totdat Hy kom en geregtigheid op julle reën.

Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.
Julle het goddeloosheid geploeg, julle het ongeregtigheid geoes; julle het die vrug van leuens geëet: omdat jy op jou weg vertrou het, in die menigte van jou magtige manne.

Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon [her] children.
Daarom sal ‚'n tumult onder jou volk opstaan, en al jou vestings sal verwoes word, soos Salman Bet-Arbel in die dag van geveg verwoes het: die moeder is op haar kinders stukkend geslaan.

So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.
So sal Bet-El aan julle doen vanweë julle groot goddeloosheid: in ’n môre sal die koning van Israel heeltemal afgesny word.
