1
Now I say, [That] the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
Nou sê ek, Dat die erfgenaam, solank as hy ’n kind is, niks verskil van ’n dienskneg nie, al is hy heer van alles;
2
But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
Maar is onder voogde en bestuurders tot die tyd wat die vader bepaal het.
3
Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
Net so was ons ook, toe ons kinders was, in diensbaarheid onder die beginsels van die wêreld:
4
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Maar toe die volheid van die tyd gekom het, het God sy Seun uitgestuur, gemaak uit ‚'n vrou, gemaak onder die wet,
5
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Om hulle wat onder die wet was te verlos, dat ons die aanneming tot kinders sou ontvang.
6
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
En omdat julle kinders is, het God die Gees van sy Seun in julle harte uitgestuur, wat roep, Abba, Vader.
7
Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
Daarom is jy nie meer ‚'n dienskneg nie, maar ‚'n seun; en as ‚'n seun, dan ‚'n erfgenaam van God deur Christus.
8
Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
Hoebeit toe julle God nie geken het nie, het julle diensbaar gewees aan dié wat van nature nie gode is nie.
9
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
Maar nou, nadat julle God geken het, of eerder deur God geken is, hoe wend julle julle weer tot die swakke en arm beginsels, waaraan julle weer van voor af diensbaar wil wees?

Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
Julle hou dae, en maande, en tye, en jare.
11
I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
Ek is bevrees vir julle, dat ek tevergeefs by julle gearbei het.
12
Brethren, I beseech you, be as I [am]; for I [am] as ye [are]: ye have not injured me at all.
Broers, ek bid julle, wees soos ek is; want ek is soos julle is: julle het my geen onreg aangedoen nie.
13
Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
Julle weet hoe ek deur swakheid van die vlees die evangelie die eerste maal aan julle verkondig het:

And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, [even] as Christ Jesus.
En my versoeking wat in my vlees was, het julle nie verag of verwerp nie; maar julle het my ontvang soos ‚'n engel van God, selfs soos Christus Jesus.
15
Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if [it had been] possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
Waar is dan die geseëndheid waarvan julle gespreek het? want ek getuig van julle, dat, as dit moontlik was, julle julle oë sou uitgetrek het, en dit aan my gegee het.

Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
Is ek daarom julle vyand geword, omdat ek julle die waarheid sê?
17
They zealously affect you, [but] not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
Hulle ywer ywerig vir julle, maar nie goed nie; ja, hulle wil julle uitsluit, dat julle vir hulle mag ywer.
18
But [it is] good to be zealously affected always in [a] good [thing], and not only when I am present with you.
Maar dit is goed om altyd ywerig te ywer in ‚'n goeie ding, en nie alleen wanneer ek by julle is nie.
19
My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
My kindertjies, van wie ek weer in barensnood is totdat Christus in julle gestalte kry,
20
I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
Ek wou by julle teenwoordig wees nou, en my stem verander; want ek staan in twyfel aangaande julle.
21
Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
Sê my, julle wat onder die wet wil wees, hoor julle nie die wet nie?
22
For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
Want daar is geskrywe, dat Abraham twee seuns gehad het, die een uit ‚'n diensmaagd, die ander uit ‚'n vrye.
23
But he [who was] of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman [was] by promise.
Maar hy wat uit die diensmaagd was, is volgens die vlees gebore; maar hy wat uit die vrye was, deur die belofte.
24
Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
Welke dinge ’n allegorie is: want hierdie is die twee verbonde; die een van die berg Sinaï, wat tot diensbaarheid baar, wat is Agar.
25
For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
Want hierdie Agar is die berg Sinaï in Arabië, en beantwoord aan Jérusalem wat nou is, en is in diensbaarheid met haar kinders.

But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Maar Jérusalem wat bo is, is vry, wat is die moeder van ons almal.
27
For it is written, Rejoice, [thou] barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
Want daar is geskrywe, Verbly jou, jy onvrugbare wat nie baar nie; breek uit en roep, jy wat nie in barensnood is nie: want die eensaame het meer kinders as sy wat die man het.

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
Nou is ons, broers, soos Isak was, kinders van die belofte.
29
But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, even so [it is] now.
Maar soos destyds hy wat volgens die vlees gebore is, hom vervolg het wat volgens die Gees gebore is, so is dit ook nou.
30
Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
Nietemin, wat sê die Skrif? Werp die diensmaagd en haar seun uit: want die seun van die diensmaagd sal nie saam met die seun van die vrye erfgenaam wees nie.

So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
So dan, broers, is ons nie kinders van die diensmaagd nie, maar van die vrye.
