Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.
Nou toe Esra so gebid, en so bely, en geween, en voor die huis van God neergeval het, het daar by hom uit Israel ‚'n baie groot vergadering van manne en vroue en kinders bymekaargekom: want die volk het baie bitterlik geween.

And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, [one] of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
En Seganja die seun van Jehiël, een van die seuns van Elam, het geantwoord en tot Esra gesê, Ons het teen onse God oortree, en vreemde vroue van die volke van die land geneem: nogtans is daar nou hoop in Israel aangaande hierdie saak.

Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
Nou daarom laat ons ’n verbond met onse God maak om al die vroue, en dié wat van hulle gebore is, weg te stuur, volgens die raad van my heer, en van dié wat bewe by die gebod van onse God; en laat dit gedoen word volgens die wet.

Arise; for [this] matter [belongeth] unto thee: we also [will be] with thee: be of good courage, and do [it].
Staan op; want hierdie saak kom jou toe: ons sal ook met jou wees: wees van goeie moed, en doen dit.

Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.
Toe het Esra opgestaan, en die owerstes van die priesters, die Leviete, en die hele Israel, ’n eed laat aflê, dat hulle volgens hierdie woord sou doen. En hulle het die eed afgelê.

Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and [when] he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.
Toe het Esra van voor die huis van God opgestaan, en in die kamer van Johanan die seun van Eljasib gegaan: en toe hy daar gekom het, het hy geen brood geëet, of water gedrink nie: want hy het gerou vanweë die oortreding van dié wat uit die ballingskap weggevoer is.

And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;
En hulle het ’n uitroep gemaak deur Juda en Jérusalem aan al die kinders van die ballingskap, dat hulle by Jérusalem moet bymekaarkom;

And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.
En dat elkeen wat nie binne drie dae kom volgens die raad van die vorstes en die ouderlinge nie, al sy goed verbeurd verklaar sou word, en self afgeskei sou word van die vergadering van dié wat uit die ballingskap weggevoer is.

Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It [was] the ninth month, on the twentieth [day] of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of [this] matter, and for the great rain.
Toe het al die manne van Juda en Benjamin binne drie dae by Jérusalem bymekaargekom. Dit was die negende maand, op die twintigste dag van die maand; en die hele volk het in die straat van die huis van God gesit, bewend vanweë hierdie saak, en vanweë die groot reën.

And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.
En Esra die priester het opgestaan, en tot hulle gesê, Julle het oortree, en vreemde vroue geneem, om by die oortreding van Israel by te voeg.

Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
Nou daarom bring belydenis aan die HERE, die God van julle vaders, en doen sy behae: en skei julle af van die volke van die land, en van die vreemde vroue.
12
Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.
Toe het die hele vergadering geantwoord en met ’n groot stem gesê, Soos jy gesê het, so moet ons doen.
13
But the people [are] many, and [it is] a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither [is this] a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.
Maar die volk is baie, en dit is ’n tyd van baie reën, en ons is nie in staat om buitekant te staan nie, en die werk is ook nie van een dag of twee nie: want ons is baie wat in hierdie saak oortree het.

Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
Laat nou ons owerstes van die hele vergadering staan, en laat almal in ons stede wat vreemde vroue geneem het, op vasgestelde tye kom, en saam met hulle die ouderlinge van elke stad, en die regters daarvan, totdat die hete toorn van onse God vir hierdie saak van ons afgewend is.

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this [matter]: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.
Net Jonatan die seun van Asahel en Jágasja die seun van Tikwa is hieroor aangestel: en Mesullam en Sabbetai die Leviet het hulle gehelp.

And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, [with] certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by [their] names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
En die kinders van die ballingskap het so gedoen. En Esra die priester, met sekere hoofde van die vaders, na die huis van hulle vaders, en almal van hulle met name, is afgesonder, en het op die eerste dag van die tiende maand gesit om die saak te ondersoek.

And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.
En hulle het ‚'n einde gemaak met al die manne wat vreemde vroue geneem het teen die eerste dag van die eerste maand.

And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: [namely], of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.
En onder die seuns van die priesters is daar gevind wat vreemde vroue geneem het: naamlik, van die seuns van Jesua die seun van Josadak, en sy broers; Maäseja, en Eliëser, en Jarib, en Gedalja.

And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and [being] guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their trespass.
En hulle het hulle hande gegee dat hulle hulle vroue sou wegstuur; en omdat hulle skuldig was, het hulle ‚'n ram van die kudde vir hulle oortreding aangebied.

And of the sons of Immer; Hanani, and Zebadiah.
En van die seuns van Immer; Hanani, en Sebadja.

And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.
En van die seuns van Harim; Maäseja, en Elía, en Semája, en Jehiël, en Ussía.

And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
En van die seuns van Pasgur; Eljoënai, Maäseja, Ismael, Netáneël, Josabad, en Elása.

Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same [is] Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
Ook van die Leviete; Josabad, en Símeï, en Kelája, (dieselfde is Kelita,) Petagja, Juda, en Eliëser.

Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.
Van die sangers ook; Eljasib: en van die poortwagters; Sallum, en Telem, en Uri.

Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, and Jeziah, and Malchiah, and Miamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.
Bowendien van Israel: van die seuns van Paros; Ramía, en Jesía, en Malkía, en Mijamin, en Eleásar, en Malkía, en Benája.

And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliah.
En van die seuns van Elam; Mattanja, Sagarja, en Jehiël, en Abdi, en Jeremot, en Elía.

And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.
En van die seuns van Sattu; Eljoënai, Eljasib, Mattanja, en Jeremot, en Sabad, en Asísa.

Of the sons also of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, [and] Athlai.

And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.

And of the sons of Pahathmoab; Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

All these had taken strange wives: and [some] of them had wives by whom they had children.
Al hierdie het vreemde vroue geneem: en sommige van hulle het vroue gehad deur wie hulle kinders gehad het.
