Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

Bélsasar die koning het ’n groot fees gemaak vir ’n duisend van sy vorstes, en het wyn voor die duisend gedrink.

Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which [was] in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

Bélsasar, terwyl hy die wyn proe, het beveel om die goue en silwer vate te bring wat sy vader Nebukadrésar uit die tempel in Jérusalem geneem het; dat die koning, en sy vorste, sy vroue, en sy byvroue, daarin mag drink.

Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which [was] at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

Toe het hulle die goue vate gebring wat uit die tempel van die huis van God in Jérusalem geneem is; en die koning, en sy vorste, sy vroue, en sy byvroue, het daarin gedrink.

They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

Hulle het wyn gedrink, en die gode van goud, en van silwer, van koper, van yster, van hout, en van klip, geprys.

In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

In dieselfde uur het daar vingers van ‚'n mens se hand uitgekom, en geskrywe teenoor die kandelaar op die pleister van die muur van die koning se paleis: en die koning het die deel van die hand gesien wat geskrywe het.

Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

Toe is die koning se gelaat verander, en sy gedagtes het hom verontrus, sodat die gewrigte van sy lendene losgeraak het, en sy knieë teen mekaar gestamp het.

The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. [And] the king spake, and said to the wise [men] of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and [have] a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Die koning het hardop geroep om die sterrekykers, die Chaldeërs, en die waarsêers in te bring. En die koning het gespreek, en tot die wyse manne van Babel gesê, Wie ook al hierdie skrif lees, en my die uitlegging daarvan toon, sal met purper beklee word, en ’n ketting van goud om sy nek hê, en sal die derde heerser in die koninkryk wees.

Then came in all the king’s wise [men]: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

Toe het al die koning se wyse manne gekom: maar hulle kon nie die skrif lees nie, en ook nie die uitlegging daarvan aan die koning bekend maak nie.

Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

Toe was koning Bélsasar baie verontrus, en sy gelaat is in hom verander: en sy vorste was verbaas.

[Now] the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: [and] the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

Nou die koningin, vanweë die woorde van die koning en sy vorste, het in die feeshuis ingekom: en die koningin het gespreek en gesê, o koning, lewe vir ewig: laat jou gedagtes jou nie verontrus nie, en laat jou gelaat nie verander nie:

There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom [is] the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, [I say], thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, [and] soothsayers;

Daar is ’n man in jou koninkryk, in wie die gees van die heilige gode is; en in die dae van jou vader is lig en verstand en wysheid, soos die wysheid van die gode, in hom gevind: wat koning Nebukadrésar jou vader, die koning, ek sê, jou vader, meester van die towenaars, sterrekykers, Chaldeërs, en waarsêers gemaak het;

Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

Aangesien ’n uitnemende gees, en kennis, en verstand, die uitlegging van drome, en die toon van harde sinne, en die oplos van twyfel, in hom gevind is, in Daniël, wat die koning Bélsasar genoem het: nou laat Daniël geroep word, en hy sal die uitlegging toon.

Then was Daniel brought in before the king. [And] the king spake and said unto Daniel, [Art] thou that Daniel, which [art] of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

Toe is Daniël voor die koning gebring. En die koning het gespreek en tot Daniël gesê, Is jy daardie Daniël, wat van die kinders van die gevangenisskap van Juda is, wat die koning my vader uit Juda gebring het?

I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods [is] in thee, and [that] light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

Ek het van jou gehoor, dat die gees van die gode in jou is, en dat lig en verstand en uitnemende wysheid in jou gevind is.

And now the wise [men], the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

En nou is die wyse manne, die sterrekykers, voor my ingebring, dat hulle hierdie skrif moet lees, en my die uitlegging daarvan bekend maak: maar hulle kon nie die uitlegging van die saak toon nie:

And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and [have] a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

En ek het van jou gehoor, dat jy uitleggende kan maak, en twyfel oplos: nou as jy die skrif kan lees, en my die uitlegging daarvan bekend maak, sal jy met purper beklee word, en ’n ketting van goud om jou nek hê, en sal die derde heerser in die koninkryk wees.

Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

Toe het Daniël geantwoord en voor die koning gesê, Laat jou geskenke vir jouself wees, en gee jou belonings aan ’n ander; tog sal ek die skrif aan die koning lees, en die uitlegging daarvan aan hom bekend maak.

O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

o jy koning, die allerhoogste God het aan Nebukadrésar jou vader ’n koninkryk, en majesteit, en heerlikheid, en eer gegee:

And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

En vir die majesteit wat Hy hom gegee het, het al die volk, nasies, en tale voor hom gebewe en gevrees: wie hy wou, het hy doodgemaak; en wie hy wou, het hy in die lewe gehou; en wie hy wou, het hy opgehef; en wie hy wou, het hy verneder.

But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

Maar toe sy hart verhef is, en sy gees verhard tot trotsheid, is hy van die troon van sy koninkryk afgesit, en hulle het die heerlikheid van hom weggeneem:

And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling [was] with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and [that] he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

En hy is van die seuns van die mens uitgedryf; en sy hart is soos die diere gemaak, en sy woning was by die wilde esels: hulle het hom gras laat eet soos osse, en sy liggaam is nat gemaak met die dou van die hemel; totdat hy geweet het dat die allerhoogste God in die koninkryk van die mens heers, en dat Hy wie Hy wil daaroor aanstel.

And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

En jy sy seun, o Bélsasar, het jou hart nie verneder nie, alhoewel jy al hierdie dinge geweet het;

But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath [is], and whose [are] all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

Maar jy het jouself teen die Here van die hemel verhef; en hulle het die vate van sy huis voor jou gebring, en jy, en jou vorste, jou vroue, en jou byvroue, het wyn daarin gedrink; en jy het die gode van silwer, en goud, van koper, yster, hout, en klip, geprys, wat nie sien, of hoor, of weet nie: en die God in wie se hand jou asem is, en wie se al jou weë is, het jy nie verheerlik nie:

Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

Toe is die deel van die hand van Hom gestuur; en hierdie skrif is geskrywe.

And this [is] the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

En dit is die skrif wat geskrywe is, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

This [is] the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

Dit is die uitlegging van die saak: MENE; God het jou koninkryk getel, en dit voleindig.

TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

TEKEL; Jy is in die weegskaal geweeg, en te lig bevind.

PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

PERES; Jou koninkryk is verdeel, en aan die Meders en Perse gegee.

Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and [put] a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

Toe het Bélsasar beveel, en hulle het Daniël met purper beklee, en ’n ketting van goud om sy nek gesit, en ’n aankondiging aangaande hom gemaak, dat hy die derde heerser in die koninkryk moet wees.

In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

In daardie nag is Bélsasar die koning van die Chaldeërs doodgeslaan.

And Darius the Median took the kingdom, [being] about threescore and two years old.

En Dariús die Meder het die koninkryk geneem, synde omtrent twee en sestig jaar oud.
