Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem.

Nou toe Féstus in die provinsie gekom het, ná drie dae het hy van Cesaréa opgegaan na Jérusalem.

Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,

Toe het die hoëpriester en die voornaamste van die Jode hom aangaande Paulus ingelig, en hom gesmeek,

And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.

En begeer guns teen hom, dat hy hom na Jérusalem sou stuur, en ’n hinderlaag lê om hom op die pad om te bring.

But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly [thither].

Maar Féstus het geantwoord, dat Paulus in Cesaréa bewaar word, en dat hy self spoedig daarheen sou vertrek.

Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with [me], and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.

Laat hulle daarom, het hy gesê, wat onder julle in staat is, saam afgaan, en my aankla, as daar enige onreg in die man is.

And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.

En toe hy onder hulle meer as tien dae vertoef het, het hy afgegaan na Cesaréa; en die volgende dag, toe hy op die regstoel sit, het hy beveel dat Paulus gebring word.

And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.

En toe hy gekom het, het die Jode wat van Jérusalem afgekoms het rondom gestaan, en baie en swaar klagtes teen Paulus gebring, wat hulle nie kon bewys nie.

While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.

Terwyl hy vir homself geantwoord het, Nóg teen die wet van die Jode, nóg teen die tempel, nóg teen César, het ek enige oortreding begaan.

But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?

Maar Féstus, willende die Jode ’n guns bewys, het Paulus geantwoord, en gesê, Wil jy na Jérusalem opgaan, en daar aangaande hierdie dinge voor my geoordeel word?

Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.

Toe het Paulus gesê, Ek staan by César se regstoel, waar ek geoordeel behoort te word: aan die Jode het ek geen onreg gedoen nie, soos jy baie goed weet.

For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.

Want as ek ’n oortreder is, of iets die dood waardig gedoen het, weier ek nie om te sterwe nie: maar as daar niks is van hierdie dinge waarvan hierdie my aankla nie, kan niemand my aan hulle oorgee nie. Ek appelleer tot César.

Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.

Toe het Féstus, toe hy met die raad beraadslaag het, geantwoord, Het jy tot César geappelleer? tot César sal jy gaan.

And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Caesarea to salute Festus.

En ná sekere dae het koning Agrippa en Berníse in Cesaréa gekom om Féstus te groet.

And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul’s cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:

En toe hulle daar baie dae vertoef het, het Féstus die saak van Paulus aan die koning verklaar, sê, Daar is ’n sekere man wat deur Féiks gebonde gelaat is:

About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed [me], desiring [to have] judgment against him.

Aangaande wie, toe ek in Jérusalem was, die owerpriesters en die ouderlinge van die Jode my ingelig het, en begeer het om ’n oordeel teen hom te hê.

To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.

Aan wie ek geantwoord het, Dit is nie die gewoonte van die Romeine om enige man tot die dood oor te gee, voordat hy wat aangekla is die aanklaers van aangesig tot aangesig het, en geleentheid het om vir homself te antwoord aangaande die aanklag nie.

Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.

Daarom, toe hulle hier gekom het, sonder enige uitstel die volgende dag, het ek op die regstoel gaan sit, en beveel dat die man gebring word:

Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:

Teen wie, toe die aanklaers opgestaan het, hulle geen aanklag gebring het van sulke dinge as ek veronderstel het nie:

19

But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

Maar het sekere vrae teen hom gehad aangaande hulle eie bygeloof, en aangaande een Jesus, wat dood was, wat Paulus beweer het dat Hy lewe.

And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked [him] whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.

En omdat ek twyfel aangaande sulke vrae, het ek gevra of hy na Jérusalem wou gaan, en daar aangaande hierdie dinge geoordeel word.

But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.

Maar toe Paulus geappelleer het om tot die ondersoek van Augustus bewaar te word, het ek beveel dat hy bewaar word totdat ek hom na César kon stuur.

Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.

Toe het Agrippa tot Féstus gesê, Ek sou self ook die man wil hoor. Môre, het hy gesê, sal jy hom hoor.

And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus’ commandment Paul was brought forth.

En die volgende dag, toe Agrippa en Berníse met groot prag gekom het, en in die regsaal ingegaan het, met die hoofmanne oor ’n duisend, en voornaamste manne van die stad, op Féstus se bevel is Paulus gebring.

And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and [also] here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

En Féstus het gesê, Koning Agrippa, en al die manne wat hier by ons is, julle sien hierdie man, aangaande wie die hele menigte van die Jode my aangespreek het, beide in Jérusalem, en hier ook, en uitgeroep dat hy nie langer behoort te lewe nie.

But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.

Maar toe ek gevind het dat hy niks die dood waardig gedoen het nie, en dat hy self tot Augustus geappelleer het, het ek bepaal om hom te stuur.

26

Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.

Aangaande wie ek geen sekere ding het om aan my heer te skrywe nie. Daarom het ek hom voor julle gebring, en veral voor jou, o koning Agrippa, dat, na ondersoek, ek iets mag hê om te skrywe.

For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes [laid] against him.

Want dit lyk vir my onredelik om ‚'n gevangene te stuur, en nie ook die aanklagte teen hom aan te dui nie.
