And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men [and] brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
En Paulus, sy oë op die raad vestigende, het gesê, Manne en broers, ek het in alle goeie gewete voor God gewandel tot hierdie dag.
2
And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.
En die hoëpriester Ananías het beveel dié wat by hom gestaan het om hom op die mond te slaan.
3
Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, [thou] whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?
Toe het Paulus tot hom gesê, God sal jou slaan, jy gewitte muur: want sit jy om my volgens die wet te oordeel, en beveel jy my teen die wet om geslaan te word?

And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest?
En dié wat bygestaan het het gesê, Skeld jy God se hoëpriester?

Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
Toe het Paulus gesê, Ek het nie geweet, broers, dat hy die hoëpriester is nie: want daar is geskrywe, Jy moet nie kwaad spreek van die owerste van jou volk nie.

But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men [and] brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
Maar toe Paulus waarneem dat die een deel Sadduseërs was, en die ander Fariseërs, het hy in die raad uitgeroep, Manne en broers, ek is ’n Fariseër, die seun van ’n Fariseër: aangaande die hoop en opstanding van die dooies word ek ondervra.

And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.
En toe hy so gesê het, was daar ’n verdeeldheid tussen die Fariseërs en die Sadduseërs: en die menigte is verdeel.

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
Want die Sadduseërs sê dat daar geen opstanding is nie, en ook geen engel of gees nie: maar die Fariseërs bely altwee.

And there arose a great cry: and the scribes [that were] of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
En daar was ’n groot geroep: en die skrifgeleerdes wat van die Fariseërs se deel was het opgestaan, en geredeneer, sê, Ons vind geen kwaad in hierdie man nie: maar as ’n gees of ’n engel met hom gespreek het, laat ons nie teen God veg nie.

And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring [him] into the castle.
En toe daar ‚'n groot verdeeldheid ontstaan het, het die hoofman oor ‚'n duisend, bevrees dat Paulus deur hulle uitmekaar getrek sou word, beveel dat die soldate afkom, en hom uit hulle midde wegruk, en in die kasteel bring.

And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.
En die volgende nag het die Here by hom gestaan, en gesê, Wees goedsmoeds, Paulus: want soos jy van My in Jérusalem getuig het, so moet jy ook in Rome getuig.

And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.
En toe dit dag was, het sekere van die Jode saamgesweer, en hulleself onder ’n vloek verbind, sê dat hulle nóg sou eet nóg drink totdat hulle Paulus omgebring het.

And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.
En daar was meer as veertig wat hierdie sameswering aangegaan het.
14
And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.
En hulle het by die owerpriesters en ouderlinge gekom, en gesê, Ons het onsself onder ’n groot vloek verbind, dat ons niks sal proe totdat ons Paulus omgebring het nie.

Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would inquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.
Nou julle daarom saam met die raad, dui die hoofman oor ’n duisend aan dat hy hom môre na julle afbring, asof julle iets meer seker aangaande hom wil ondersoek: en ons, of hy naby kom, is gereed om hom om te bring.

And when Paul’s sister’s son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.
En toe Paulus se suster se seun van hulle hinderlaag hoor, het hy gegaan en in die kasteel ingegaan, en dit aan Paulus vertel.

Then Paul called one of the centurions unto [him], and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.
Toe het Paulus een van die honderdmanne by hom geroep, en gesê, Bring hierdie jongman na die hoofman oor ’n duisend: want hy het iets om aan hom te vertel.

So he took him, and brought [him] to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto [him], and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.
So het hy hom geneem, en na die hoofman oor ’n duisend gebring, en gesê, Paulus die gevangene het my by hom geroep, en my gesmeek om hierdie jongman na jou te bring, wat iets het om aan jou te sê.

Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went [with him] aside privately, and asked [him], What is that thou hast to tell me?
Toe het die hoofman oor ’n duisend hom by die hand geneem, en op ’n plek opsy gegaan, en hom in die geheim gevra, Wat is dit wat jy aan my te sê het?
20
And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would inquire somewhat of him more perfectly.
En hy het gesê, Die Jode het ooreengekom om jou te smeek dat jy Paulus môre in die raad afbring, asof hulle iets meer seker aangaande hom sou ondersoek.

But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
Maar gee jy nie aan hulle toe nie: want daar lê vir hom meer as veertig man in hinderlaag, wat hulleself onder ’n vloek verbind het, dat hulle nóg sal eet nóg drink totdat hulle hom omgebring het: en nou is hulle gereed, en wag op ’n belofte van jou.

So the chief captain [then] let the young man depart, and charged [him, See thou] tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.
So het die hoofman oor ’n duisend die jongman toe laat gaan, en hom beveel, Sê niemand dat jy hierdie dinge aan my openbaar gemaak het nie.
23
And he called unto [him] two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;
En hy het twee honderdmanne by hom geroep, sê, Maak gereed twee honderd soldate om na Cesaréa te gaan, en ruiters sewentig, en spiesmanne twee honderd, teen die derde uur van die nag;

And provide [them] beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring [him] safe unto Felix the governor.
En voorsien diere, dat hulle Paulus daarop mag sit, en hom veilig na Féiks die goewerneur bring.
25
And he wrote a letter after this manner:
En hy het ‚'n brief geskrywe op hierdie wyse:

Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix [sendeth] greeting.
Klaudius Lísias aan die uitnemende goewerneur Féiks stuur groete.
27
This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.
Hierdie man is deur die Jode gegryp, en sou deur hulle omgebring word: toe het ek met ’n leër gekom, en hom gered, nadat ek verstaan het dat hy ’n Romein was.

And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:
En toe ek wou weet die oorsaak waarom hulle hom aangekla het, het ek hom in hulle raad afgebring:
29
Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.
Wat ek gevind het aangekla te word aangaande vrae van hulle wet, maar om niks aangekla te word wat die dood of bande waardig is nie.
30
And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what [they had] against him. Farewell.
En toe dit my vertel is hoe dat die Jode ’n hinderlaag teen die man gelê het, het ek hom dadelik na jou gestuur, en ook sy aanklaers beveel om voor jou te sê wat hulle teen hom gehad het. Vaarwel.

Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought [him] by night to Antipatris.
Toe het die soldate, soos dit hulle beveel is, Paulus geneem, en hom in die nag na Antípatris gebring.

On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:
Die volgende dag het hulle die ruiters laat gaan om saam met hom te gaan, en na die kasteel teruggekeer:

Who, when they came to Caesarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.
Wat, toe hulle in Cesaréa gekom het, en die brief aan die goewerneur afgelewer het, het hulle Paulus ook voor hom gestel.

And when the governor had read [the letter], he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that [he was] of Cilicia;
En toe die goewerneur die brief gelees het, het hy gevra van watter provinsie hy was. En toe hy verstaan het dat hy van Silisië was,
35
I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.
Het hy gesê, Ek sal jou hoor, wanneer jou aanklaers ook gekom het. En hy het beveel dat hy in Herodes se regsaal bewaar word.
