(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
(En toe hulle hoor dat hy in die Hebreeuse taal tot hulle gespreek het, het hulle des te stiller gehou: en hy sê,)

I am verily a man [which am] a Jew, born in Tarsus, [a city] in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, [and] taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
Ek is waarlik ’n man wat ’n Jood is, gebore in Tarsus, ’n stad in Silisië, tog grootgemaak in hierdie stad by die voete van Gamaliël, en onderwys volgens die volmaakte wyse van die wet van die vaders, en was ywerig teenoor God, soos julle almal vandag is.

And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
En ek het hierdie weg tot die dood vervolg, manne en vroue bindende en in die gevangenisse oorgelewer.

As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
Soos ook die hoëpriester my getuie is, en die hele raad van die ouderlinge: van wie ek ook briewe na die broers ontvang het, en na Damaskus gegaan het, om hulle wat daar was gebonde na Jérusalem te bring, om gestraf te word.

And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
En dit het gebeur, dat, soos ek gereis het, en naby Damaskus gekom het omtrent die middag, skielik daar ‚'n groot lig uit die hemel om my geskyn het.

And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
En ek het op die grond geval, en ’n stem gehoor wat tot my sê, Saul, Saul, waarom vervolg jy My?

And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
En ek het geantwoord, Wie is U, Here? En Hy het tot my gesê, Ek is Jesus van Nasaret, wat jy vervolg.

And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
En hulle wat by my was het wel die lig gesien, en was bevrees; maar hulle het nie die stem gehoor van Hom wat met my gespreek het nie.
10
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
En ek het gesê, Wat moet ek doen, Here? En die Here het tot my gesê, Staan op, en gaan in Damaskus; en daar sal jou vertel word van al die dinge wat vir jou aangestel is om te doen.

And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
En toe ek nie kon sien van die heerlikheid van daardie lig nie, is ek by die hand gelei deur hulle wat by my was, en in Damaskus gekom.

And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt [there],
En een Ananías, ’n godvresende man volgens die wet, wat goeie getuienis gehad het van al die Jode wat daar woon,

Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
Het by my gekom, en by my gestaan, en tot my gesê, Broer Saul, ontvang jou sig. En dieselfde uur het ek opkyk na hom.
14
And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
En hy het gesê, Die God van ons vaders het jou uitverkies, dat jy sy wil sou ken, en sien daardie Regverdige, en hoor die stem van sy mond.

For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
Want jy sal sy getuie wees tot al die mense van wat jy gesien en gehoor het.
16
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
En nou waarom vertoef jy? staan op, en laat jou doop, en was jou sondes af, en roep die Naam van die Here aan.

And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
En dit het gebeur, dat, toe ek weer in Jérusalem gekom het, selfs terwyl ek in die tempel gebid het, ek in ’n vervoering was;
18
And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
En Hom sien sê tot my, Maak gou, en gaan spoedig uit Jérusalem: want hulle sal nie jou getuienis aangaande My ontvang nie.

And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
En ek het gesê, Here, hulle weet dat ek dié wat in U geglo het in elke sinagoge gevange geneem en geslaan het:

And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
En toe die bloed van u martelaar Stefanus vergiet is, het ek ook bygestaan, en toegestem tot sy dood, en die klere van hulle bewaar wat hom omgebring het.

And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
En Hy het tot my gesê, Gaan heen: want ek sal jou ver na die heidene stuur.
22
And they gave him audience unto this word, and [then] lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a [fellow] from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
En hulle het na hom geluister tot hierdie woord, en toe hulle hulle stemme opgehef, en gesê, Weg met so ’n man van die aarde: want dit is nie reg dat hy lewe nie.

And as they cried out, and cast off [their] clothes, and threw dust into the air,
En soos hulle uitgeroep het, en hulle klere uitgeskud het, en stof in die lug gegooi het,

The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
Het die hoofman oor ’n duisend beveel dat hy in die kasteel gebring word, en gesê dat hy deur geseling ondersoek moet word; dat hy mag weet waarom hulle so teen hom uitgeroep het.

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
En soos hulle hom met rieme vasgemaak het, het Paulus tot die honderdman wat bygestaan het gesê, Is dit geoorloof vir julle om ’n man wat ’n Romein is te gesel, en onveroordeel?

When the centurion heard [that], he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
Toe die honderdman dit hoor, het hy gegaan en dit aan die hoofman oor ’n duisend vertel, sê, Gee ag wat jy doen: want hierdie man is ’n Romein.
27
Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
Toe het die hoofman oor ’n duisend gekom, en tot hom gesê, Sê my, is jy ’n Romein? Hy het gesê, Ja.

And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was [free] born.
En die hoofman oor ’n duisend het geantwoord, Met ’n groot som het ek hierdie burgerskap verkry. En Paulus het gesê, Maar ek is vry gebore.

Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
Toe het hulle dadelik van hom gewyk wat hom sou ondersoek: en die hoofman oor ‚'n duisend was ook bevrees, nadat hy geweet het dat hy ‚'n Romein was, en omdat hy hom gebind het.

On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from [his] bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
Die volgende dag, omdat hy seker wou weet waarom hy deur die Jode aangekla is, het hy hom losgemaak van sy bande, en beveel dat die owerpriesters en hulle hele raad moet bymekaarkom, en Paulus afgebring, en hom voor hulle gestel.
