And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
En dit het gebeur, dat, terwyl Apollos in Korinthe was, Paulus, nadat hy die boonste streke deurgegaan het, in Efese gekom het: en sekere dissipels gevind het,

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
Hy het tot hulle gesê, Het julle die Heilige Gees ontvang toe julle geglo het? En hulle het tot hom gesê, Ons het nie eers gehoor of daar ’n Heilige Gees is nie.

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
En hy het tot hulle gesê, Waarmee is julle dan gedoop? En hulle het gesê, Met Johannes se doop.

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Toe het Paulus gesê, Johannes het waarlik die doop van bekering gedoop, sê tot die volk, dat hulle moes glo in Hom wat ná hom sou kom, dit is, in Christus Jesus.

When they heard [this], they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Toe hulle dit hoor, is hulle gedoop in die Naam van die Here Jesus.

And when Paul had laid [his] hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
En toe Paulus sy hande op hulle gelê het, het die Heilige Gees op hulle gekom; en hulle het met tale gespreek, en geprofeteer.

And all the men were about twelve.
En al die manne was omtrent twaalf.

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
En hy het drie maande lank in die sinagoge gegaan, en vrymoedig geredeneer, en oortuig aangaande die dinge van die koninkryk van God.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
Maar toe sommige verhard en ongelowig was, en die weg voor die menigte sleggemaak het, het hy van hulle gewyk, en die dissipels afgesonder, en daagliks in die skool van een Tiránnus geredeneer.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
En dit het twee jaar lank voortgegaan; sodat almal wat in Asië woon die woord van die Here Jesus gehoor het, beide Jode en Grieke.

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
En God het besondere wonders deur die hande van Paulus gedoen:

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
Sodat van sy liggaam handdoeke of voorskote na die siekes gebring is, en die siektes van hulle gewyk het, en die boos geeste van hulle uitgegaan het.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
Toe het sekere van die rondloper Joodse besweerders dit onderneem om die Naam van die Here Jesus oor dié wat boos geeste gehad het, aan te roep, sê, Ons besweer julle by Jesus wat Paulus verkondig.

And there were seven sons of [one] Sceva, a Jew, [and] chief of the priests, which did so.
En daar was sewe seuns van een Skeva, ‚'n Jood, en owerpriester, wat so gedoen het.

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
En die boos gees het geantwoord en gesê, Jesus ken ek, en Paulus ken ek; maar wie is julle?

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
En die man in wie die boos gees was het op hulle gespring, en hulle oorweldig, en teen hulle die oorhand gekry, sodat hulle naak en gewond uit daardie huis gevlug het.

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
En dit is bekend geword aan al die Jode en Grieke wat ook in Efese woon; en vrees het op hulle almal geval: en die Naam van die Here Jesus is verheerlik.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
En baie wat geglo het het gekom, en hulle dade bely, en aangedui.

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all [men]: and they counted the price of them, and found [it] fifty thousand [pieces] of silver.
Baie van hulle ook wat ydele kunste beoefen het het hulle boeke bymekaargebring, en hulle voor almal verbrand: en hulle het die prys daarvan opgetel, en gevind dit vyftig duisend stukke silwer.

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
So magtig het die woord van God gegroei en die oorhand gekry.

After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.
Ná hierdie dinge was voleindig, het Paulus in die gees voorgeneem, toe hy Masedonië en Agáje deurgegaan het, om na Jérusalem te gaan, sê, Nadat ek daar was, moet ek ook Rome sien.

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
So het hy in Masedonië twee van hulle wat hom bedien het, Timótheüs en Erástus, gestuur; maar hy self het ’n tyd in Asië vertoef.

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
En dieselfde tyd was daar geen klein opskudding aangaande daardie weg nie.

For a certain [man] named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
Want ’n sekere man, met die naam van Demétrius, ’n silwersmid, wat silwer tempels vir Diana gemaak het, het aan die ambagsmanne geen klein wins verskaf nie;

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
Wat hy bymekaargeroep het met die werkers van dergelike dinge, en gesê, Manne, julle weet dat deur hierdie ambag ons ons rykdom het.

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
Bowendien sien en hoor julle, dat nie alleen by Efese, maar byna deur die hele Asië, hierdie Paulus baie mense oortuig en afgekeer het, sê dat hulle nie gode is nie, wat met hande gemaak is:

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
Sodat nie alleen hierdie ons ambag in gevaar is om tot niks te kom nie; maar ook dat die tempel van die groot godin Diana verag sou word, en haar majesteit vernietig sou word, wat die hele Asië en die wêreld aanbid.

And when they heard [these sayings], they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great [is] Diana of the Ephesians.
En toe hulle dit hoor, is hulle vol toorn, en het uitgeroep, sê, Groot is Diana van die Efesiërs.

And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
En die hele stad is gevul met verwarring: en nadat hulle Gajus en Aristárgus, manne van Masedonië, Paulus se reisgenote, gegryp het, het hulle eendragtig in die teater ingehardloop.

And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
En toe Paulus in die volk wou ingaan, het die dissipels hom nie toegelaat nie.

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring [him] that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.
En sekere van die owerstes van Asië, wat sy vriende was, het tot hom gestuur, en begeer dat hy homself nie in die teater sou begeef nie.

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
Sommige het daarom een ding uitgeroep, en sommige ‚'n ander: want die vergadering was verward; en die meerderheid het nie geweet waarom hulle bymekaargekom het nie.

And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.
En hulle het Alexander uit die menigte vorentoe getrek, die Jode hom vorentoe sitende. En Alexander het met die hand stilgemaak, en sou ‚'n verdediging voor die volk maak.

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great [is] Diana of the Ephesians.
Maar toe hulle verstaan het dat hy ’n Jood was, het daar een stem uit almal vir omtrent die ruimte van twee ure uitgeroep, Groot is Diana van die Efesiërs.

And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, [Ye] men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the [image] which fell down from Jupiter?
En toe die stadsklerk die mense stilgemaak het, het hy gesê, Julle manne van Efese, watter man is daar wat nie weet dat die stad van die Efesiërs ’n aanbidster is van die groot godin Diana, en van die beeld wat uit Jupiter geval het nie?

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
Aangesien hierdie dinge dan nie teëgespreek kan word nie, behoort julle stil te wees, en niks onbesonne te doen nie.

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
Want julle het hierdie manne hierheen gebring, wat nie tempelrowers is nie, en ook nie julle godin laster nie.

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.
Daarom as Demétrius, en die ambagsmanne wat by hom is, ’n saak teen enige man het, is die regdag oop, en daar is landvoogde: laat hulle mekaar aankla.

But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
Maar as julle iets aangaande ander sake vra, sal dit in ‚'n wettige vergadering bepaal word.
40
For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.
Want ons is in gevaar om aangekla te word vir hierdie dag se oproer, aangesien daar geen oorsaak is waardeur ons rekenskap kan gee van hierdie sameloop nie.

And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
En toe hy hierdie dinge gesê het, het hy die vergadering ontbind.
