And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
En dit was so daarna, dat die koning van die kinders van Ammon gesterwe het, en Hanun sy seun in sy plek as koning geregeer het.

Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
Toe het Dawid gesê, Ek sal barmhartigheid bewys aan Hanun die seun van Nagas, soos sy vader barmhartigheid aan my bewys het. En Dawid het gestuur om hom deur die hand van sy dienaars te troos oor sy vader. En Dawid se dienaars het in die land van die kinders van Ammon gekom.

And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David [rather] sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
En die vorste van die kinders van Ammon het tot Hanun hulle heer gesê, Dink jy dat Dawid jou vader eer, omdat hy troosters na jou gestuur het? het Dawid nie sy dienaars na jou gestuur om die stad te deursoek, en om dit te verken, en om dit om te keer nie?

Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, [even] to their buttocks, and sent them away.
Daarom het Hanun Dawid se dienaars geneem, en die een helfte van hulle baarde afgeskeer, en hulle klere in die middel tot by hulle heupe afgesny, en hulle weggestuur.

When they told [it] unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and [then] return.
Toe hulle dit aan Dawid vertel het, het hy boodskappers gestuur om hulle tegemoet te gaan, omdat die manne baie skaam was: en die koning het gesê, Bly in Jérigo totdat julle baarde gegroei het, en keer dan terug.

And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.
En toe die kinders van Ammon gesien het dat hulle hulleself stinkend gemaak het voor Dawid, het die kinders van Ammon boodskappers gestuur, en die Síriërs van Bet-Rehob, en die Síriërs van Soba, twintig duisend voetgangers, en die koning van Maäga, ’n duisend man, en die manne van Tob, twaalf duisend man, gehuur.

And when David heard of [it], he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
En toe Dawid dit gehoor het, het hy Joab gestuur, en die hele leër van die dapper manne.

And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, [were] by themselves in the field.
En die kinders van Ammon het uitgekom, en hulle in slagorde gestel by die ingang van die poort: en die Síriërs van Soba, en van Rehob, en Is-Tob, en Maäga, was op hulle eie in die veld.

When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice [men] of Israel, and put [them] in array against the Syrians:
Toe Joab gesien het dat die front van die geveg teen hom was, voor en agter, het hy ’n keuse van al die uitgesoekte manne van Israel geneem, en hulle in slagorde gestel teen die Síriërs:

And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put [them] in array against the children of Ammon.
En die oorblyfsel van die volk het hy onder die hand van Abísai sy broer gestel, dat hy hulle in slagorde mag stel teen die kinders van Ammon.

And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
En hy het gesê, As die Síriërs te sterk is vir my, dan moet jy my help: maar as die kinders van Ammon te sterk is vir jou, dan sal ek kom en jou help.

Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.
Wees dapper, en laat ons sterk wees vir ons volk, en vir die stede van onse God: en die HERE doen wat goed is in sy oë.

And Joab drew nigh, and the people that [were] with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
En Joab het nader gekom, en die volk wat by hom was, tot die geveg teen die Síriërs: en hulle het voor hom gevlug.
14
And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
En toe die kinders van Ammon gesien het dat die Síriërs gevlug het, het hulle ook voor Abísai gevlug, en in die stad ingegaan. So het Joab dan van die kinders van Ammon af teruggekeer, en by Jérusalem gekom.

And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
En toe die Síriërs gesien het dat hulle voor Israel verslaan was, het hulle bymekaargekom.
16
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that [were] beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer [went] before them.
En Hadadésér het gestuur, en die Síriërs wat oorkant die rivier was, uitgebring: en hulle het by Helam gekom; en Sobag die owerste van die leër van Hadadésér het voor hulle uitgegaan.

And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
En toe dit aan Dawid vertel is, het hy die hele Israel bymekaargemaak, en deur die Jordaan gegaan, en by Helam gekom. En die Síriërs het hulleself in slagorde teen Dawid gestel, en teen hom geveg.

And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew [the men of] seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
En die Síriërs het voor Israel gevlug; en Dawid het van die Síriërs die manne van sewehonderd strydwaens, en veertig duisend ruiters, neergeslaan, en Sobag die owerste van hulle leër getref, dat hy daar gesterwe het.

And when all the kings [that were] servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
En toe al die konings wat dienaars van Hadadésér was, gesien het dat hulle voor Israel verslaan was, het hulle vrede met Israel gemaak, en hulle gedien. So was die Síriërs dan bevrees om die kinders van Ammon meer te help.
