Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name [was] Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.
Nou was daar ’n man van Benjamin, wie se naam was Kis, die seun van Abiëel, die seun van Seror, die seun van Bekorat, die seun van Afíag, ’n Benjamiet, ’n magtige man van mag.

And he had a son, whose name [was] Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and [there was] not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward [he was] higher than any of the people.
En hy het ’n seun gehad, wie se naam was Saul, ’n uitgesoekte jongman, en ’n goeie: en daar was nie onder die kinders van Israel ’n goeie persoon as hy nie: van sy skouers af en opwaarts was hy hoër as enige van die volk.

And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.
En die esels van Kis, Saul se vader, was weggeraak. En Kis het tot Saul sy seun gesê, Neem nou een van die dienaars met jou, en staan op, gaan soek die esels.

And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found [them] not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and [there they were] not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found [them] not.
En hy het deur die berg Efraim gegaan, en deur die land Salisa, maar hulle het hulle nie gevind nie: toe het hulle deur die land Saälim gegaan, en daar was hulle nie: en hy het deur die land van die Benjamiete gegaan, maar hulle het hulle nie gevind nie.

[And] when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that [was] with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave [caring] for the asses, and take thought for us.
En toe hulle in die land Suf gekom het, het Saul tot sy dienaar gesê wat by hom was, Kom, en laat ons terugkeer; dat my vader nie ophou om vir die esels te sorg, en bekommerd word oor ons nie.

And he said unto him, Behold now, [there is] in this city a man of God, and [he is] an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.
En hy het tot hom gesê, Kyk nou, daar is in hierdie stad ’n man van God, en hy is ’n man wat in aansien is; alles wat hy sê, kom sekerlik uit: laat ons nou daarheen gaan; miskien kan hy ons ons pad wys wat ons moet gaan.

Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, [if] we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and [there is] not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
Toe het Saul tot sy dienaar gesê, Maar kyk, as ons gaan, wat moet ons die man bring? want die brood is op in ons vate, en daar is geen geskenk om aan die man van God te bring nie: wat het ons?

And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: [that] will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
En die dienaar het Saul weer geantwoord, en gesê, Kyk, ek het hier by my die vierde deel van ’n sikkel silwer: dit sal ek aan die man van God gee, om ons ons pad te wys.

(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for [he that is] now [called] a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
(Vroeër in Israel, wanneer ’n man gegaan het om God te raadpleeg, het hy so gesê, Kom, en laat ons na die siener gaan: want hy wat vandag ’n profeet genoem word, was vroeër ’n siener genoem.)

Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God [was].
Toe het Saul tot sy dienaar gesê, Goed gesê; kom, laat ons gaan. So het hulle dan na die stad gegaan waar die man van God was.

[And] as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?
En toe hulle die heuwel na die stad opgaan, het hulle jong meisies gevind wat uitgaan om water te skep, en tot hulle gesê, Is die siener hier?

And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, [he is] before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for [there is] a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
En hulle het hulle geantwoord, en gesê, Hy is; kyk, hy is voor jou: maak haastig nou, want hy het vandag in die stad gekom; want daar is ’n offer van die volk vandag in die hoogte.

As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; [and] afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
Sodra julle in die stad inkom, sal julle hom dadelik vind, voordat hy opgaan na die hoogte om te eet: want die volk sal nie eet totdat hy kom nie, omdat hy die offer moet seën; en daarna eet die wat genooi is. Gaan nou dan op; want omtrent hierdie tyd sal julle hom vind.

And they went up into the city: [and] when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
En hulle het opgegaan na die stad: en toe hulle in die stad inkom, kyk, Samuel het uitgekom om hulle tegemoet te gaan, om op te gaan na die hoogte.

Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
Nou het die HERE aan Samuel die dag tevore, voordat Saul gekom het, in sy oor geopenbaar, en gesê,
16
To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him [to be] captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
Môre omtrent hierdie tyd sal ek ’n man van die land Benjamin na jou stuur, en jy moet hom tot ’n vorste oor my volk Israel salf, dat hy my volk uit die hand van die Filistyne mag red: want ek het my volk aangesien, omdat hulle geroep het gekom het.

And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
En toe Samuel Saul gesien het, het die HERE tot hom gesê, Kyk die man van wie ek tot jou gespreek het! hierdie selfde sal oor my volk heers.
18
Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house [is].
Toe het Saul nader by Samuel gekom in die poort, en gesê, Sê my, ek bid jou, waar is die siener se huis?
19
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I [am] the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that [is] in thine heart.
En Samuel het Saul geantwoord, en gesê, Ek is die siener: gaan voor my op na die hoogte; want julle moet vandag met my eet, en môre sal ek jou laat gaan, en jou alles vertel wat in jou hart is.

And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom [is] all the desire of Israel? [Is it] not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
En wat die esels betref wat drie dae gelede weggeraak het, sit jou gemoed nie daarop nie; want hulle is gevind. En op wie is al die begeerte van Israel? is dit nie op jou, en op jou vader se hele huis nie?

And Saul answered and said, [Am] not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
En Saul het geantwoord en gesê, Is ek nie ’n Benjamiet, van die kleinste van die stamme van Israel nie? en is my familie nie die geringste van al die families van die stam van Benjamin nie? waarom spreek jy dan so tot my?

And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which [were] about thirty persons.
En Samuel het Saul en sy dienaar geneem, en hulle in die kamer gebring, en hulle ‚'n plek gegee aan die hoof van die wat genooi was, wat omtrent dertig persone was.

And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.
En Samuel het tot die kok gesê, Bring die deel wat ek jou gegee het, waarvan ek tot jou gesê het, Sit dit by jou.

And the cook took up the shoulder, and [that] which [was] upon it, and set [it] before Saul. And [Samuel] said, Behold that which is left! set [it] before thee, [and] eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
En die kok het die skouer opgelig, en dit wat daarby was, en dit voor Saul neergesit. En Samuel het gesê, Kyk, dit wat oorgelaat is! sit dit voor jou, en eet: want tot hierdie tyd is dit vir jou bewaar, aangesien ek gesê het, Ek het die volk genooi. So het Saul dan daardie dag met Samuel geëet.

And when they were come down from the high place into the city, [Samuel] communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
En toe hulle van die hoogte afgekom het in die stad, het Samuel met Saul op die dak gespreek.

And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
En hulle het vroeg opgestaan: en dit was so omtrent die dagbreek, dat Samuel Saul op die dak geroep het, en gesê, Staan op, dat ek jou mag wegstuur. En Saul het opgestaan, en hulle het albei uitgegaan, hy en Samuel, na buite.

[And] as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.
En toe hulle by die end van die stad afgaan, het Samuel tot Saul gesê, Sê aan die dienaar dat hy voor ons uit moet gaan (en hy het voortgegaan), maar staan jy ’n rukkie stil, dat ek jou die woord van God mag bekend maak.
