And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
En dit was so, toe Samuel oud was, dat hy sy seuns as regters oor Israel aangestel het.

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: [they were] judges in Beersheba.
Nou was die naam van sy eersgeborene Joël; en die naam van sy tweede, Abía: hulle was regters in Beërséba.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
En sy seuns het nie in sy weë gewandel nie, maar het agter wins aangegaan, en geskenke geneem, en die oordeel verdraai.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
Toe het al die ouderlinge van Israel bymekaargekom, en by Samuel in Rama gekom,

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
En tot hom gesê, Kyk, jy is oud, en jou seuns wandel nie in jou weë nie: stel nou vir ons ’n koning aan om ons te rig soos al die nasies.

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
Maar die saak het Samuel misbehaag, toe hulle gesê het, Gee ons ’n koning om ons te rig. En Samuel het tot die HERE gebid.

And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
En die HERE het tot Samuel gesê, Luister na die stem van die volk in alles wat hulle tot jou sê: want hulle het jou nie verwerp nie, maar hulle het My verwerp, dat ek nie koning oor hulle sou wees nie.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Volgens al die werke wat hulle gedoen het van die dag af dat ek hulle uit Egipte uitgebring het selfs tot hierdie dag, waarmee hulle My verlaat het, en ander gode gedien het, so doen hulle ook aan jou.

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
Nou dan, luister na hulle stem: hoebeit moet jy hulle sekerlik waarsku, en hulle die manier van die koning wys wat oor hulle sal heers.

And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.
En Samuel het al die woorde van die HERE aan die volk vertel wat van hom ‚'n koning gevra het.
11
And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint [them] for himself, for his chariots, and [to be] his horsemen; and [some] shall run before his chariots.
En hy het gesê, Dit sal die manier van die koning wees wat oor julle sal heers: Hy sal julle seuns neem, en hulle vir homself aanstel, vir sy strydwaens, en om sy ruiters te wees; en sommige sal voor sy strydwaens hardloop.

And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and [will set them] to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
En hy sal vir homself owerstes oor duisende, en owerstes oor vyftigs aanstel; en hy sal hulle aanstel om sy grond te ploeg, en om sy oes in te samel, en om sy oorlogsinstrumente, en instrumente van sy strydwaens te maak.

And he will take your daughters [to be] confectionaries, and [to be] cooks, and [to be] bakers.
En hy sal julle dogters neem om salfmengsters, en kooksters, en baksters te wees.
14
And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, [even] the best [of them], and give [them] to his servants.
En hy sal julle velde, en julle wingerde, en julle olyfbome, die beste daarvan, neem, en dit aan sy dienaars gee.
15
And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
En hy sal die tiende van julle saad, en van julle wingerde neem, en dit aan sy amptenare, en aan sy dienaars gee.
16
And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put [them] to his work.
En hy sal julle diensknegte, en julle diensmaagde, en julle beste jongmanne, en julle esels neem, en hulle vir sy werk aanstel.
17
He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
Hy sal die tiende van julle skape neem: en julle sal sy diensknegte wees.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
En julle sal in daardie dag uitroep vanweë julle koning wat julle vir julle gekies het; en die HERE sal julle in daardie dag nie verhoor nie.
19
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
Nogtans het die volk geweier om na die stem van Samuel te luister; en hulle het gesê, Nee; maar ons wil ’n koning oor ons hê;
20
That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
Dat ons ook soos al die nasies mag wees; en dat ons koning ons mag rig, en voor ons uit mag uitgaan, en ons oorloë mag voer.
21
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.
En Samuel het al die woorde van die volk gehoor, en hulle in die ore van die HERE herhaal.
22
And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
En die HERE het tot Samuel gesê, Luister na hulle stem, en stel ’n koning oor hulle aan. En Samuel het tot die manne van Israel gesê, Gaan julle elkeen na sy stad.
