And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David [is] in the wilderness of Engedi.
En dit was so, toe Saul van die agtervolging van die Filistyne teruggekeer het, dat dit aan hom vertel is, en gesê is, Kyk, Dawid is in die wildernis van En-Gedi.

Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
Toe het Saul drieduisend uitgesoekte manne uit die hele Israel geneem, en gegaan om Dawid en sy manne te soek op die rotse van die wilde bokke.

And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where [was] a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
En hy het by die skape-krale langs die pad gekom, waar daar ‚'n spelonk was; en Saul het ingegaan om sy voete te bedek: en Dawid en sy manne het in die sye van die spelonk gebly.

And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.
En die manne van Dawid het tot hom gesê, Kyk die dag waarvan die HERE tot jou gesê het, Kyk, ek gee jou vyand in jou hand, dat jy met hom mag doen soos dit goed is in jou oë. Toe het Dawid opgestaan, en die soom van Saul se mantel stilletjies afgesny.

And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.
En dit was so daarna, dat Dawid se hart hom geslaan het, omdat hy Saul se soom afgesny het.

And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he [is] the anointed of the LORD.
En hy het tot sy manne gesê, Die HERE verbied my dat ek hierdie ding aan my heer, die HERE se gesalfde, sou doen, om my hand teen hom uit te steek, aangesien hy die HERE se gesalfde is.

So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on [his] way.
So het Dawid dan sy manne met hierdie woorde weerhou, en hulle nie toegelaat om teen Saul op te staan nie. Maar Saul het opgestaan uit die spelonk, en sy pad gegaan.

David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
Dawid het ook daarna opgestaan, en uit die spelonk uitgegaan, en agter Saul aangeroep, en gesê, My heer die koning. En toe Saul agterom gekyk het, het Dawid met sy aangesig na die aarde gebuig, en homself neergebuig.

And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?
En Dawid het tot Saul gesê, Waarom luister jy na die woorde van mense, wat sê, Kyk, Dawid soek jou onheil?

Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and [some] bade [me] kill thee: but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he [is] the LORD’S anointed.
Kyk, hierdie dag het jou oë gesien hoe die HERE jou vandag in ’n spelonk in my hand oorgegee het: en sommige het my aangerê om jou dood te maak: maar my oog het jou gespaar; en ek het gesê, Ek sal my hand nie teen my heer uitsteek nie; want hy is die HERE se gesalfde.

Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that [there is] neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
Bowendien, my vader, kyk, ja, kyk die soom van jou mantel in my hand: want deurdat ek die soom van jou mantel afgesny het, en jou nie doodgemaak het nie, weet en sien dat daar geen boosheid of oortreding in my hand is nie, en ek het nie teen jou gesondig nie; tog jag jy my siel om dit te neem.

The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
Die HERE oordeel tussen my en jou, en die HERE wreek my op jou: maar my hand sal nie teen jou wees nie.
13
As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
Soos die spreekwoord van die oues sê, Uit die goddeloses kom goddeloosheid voort: maar my hand sal nie teen jou wees nie.
14
After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.
Ná wie is die koning van Israel uitgegaan? ná wie jag jy? ná ’n dooie hond, ná ’n enkele vlooi.
15
The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.
Die HERE dan wees regter, en oordeel tussen my en jou, en sien, en bepleit my saak, en red my uit jou hand.
16
And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, [Is] this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
En dit was so, toe Dawid klaar was met hierdie woorde tot Saul te spreek, dat Saul gesê het, Is dit jou stem, my seun Dawid? En Saul het sy stem opgehef, en geween.

And he said to David, Thou [art] more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
En hy het tot Dawid gesê, Jy is regverdiger as ek: want jy het my goed vergeld, terwyl ek jou kwaad vergeld het.

And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.
En jy het vandag gewys hoe jy goed aan my gedoen het: aangesien die HERE my in jou hand oorgegee het, en jy my nie doodgemaak het nie.

For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
Want as ‚'n man sy vyand vind, sal hy hom laat gaan op ‚'n goeie pad? daarom mag die HERE jou goed vergeld vir dit wat jy vandag aan my gedoen het.
20
And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
En nou, kyk, ek weet goed dat jy sekerlik koning sal wees, en dat die koninkryk van Israel in jou hand sal gevestig word.
21
Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.
Sweer nou dan aan my by die HERE, dat jy my saad ná my nie sal uitroei nie, en dat jy my naam nie uit my vader se huis sal uitwis nie.

And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.
En Dawid het aan Saul gesweer. En Saul het na sy huis gegaan; maar Dawid en sy manne het opgeklim na die vesting.
