And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
En die HERE het tot Samuel gesê, Hoe lank sal jy oor Saul rou, aangesien ek hom as koning oor Israel verwerp het? Vul jou horing met olie, en gaan, ek sal jou na Isai die Betlehemiet stuur: want ek het vir My ’n koning onder sy seuns voorsien.

And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear [it], he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
En Samuel het gesê, Hoe kan ek gaan? as Saul dit hoor, sal hy my doodmaak. En die HERE het gesê, Neem ’n verskalf met jou, en sê, Ek is gekom om aan die HERE te offer.

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me [him] whom I name unto thee.
En roep Isai tot die offer, en ek sal jou wys wat jy moet doen: en jy moet vir My salf wie ek jou sê.

And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
En Samuel het gedoen wat die HERE gespreek het, en by Betlehem gekom. En die ouderlinge van die stad het bewend uitgegaan om hom tegemoet te gaan, en gesê, Kom jy in vrede?

And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
En hy het gesê, In vrede: ek is gekom om aan die HERE te offer: heilig julle self, en kom met my tot die offer. En hy het Isai en sy seuns geheilig, en hulle tot die offer genooi.

And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’S anointed [is] before him.
En dit was so, toe hulle gekom het, dat hy Eliab aangesien het, en gesê het, Sekerlik is die HERE se gesalfde voor Hom.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [the LORD seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
Maar die HERE het tot Samuel gesê, Moenie na sy aangesig kyk, of na die hoogte van sy gestalte nie; omdat ek hom verwerp het: want die HERE sien nie soos die mens sien nie; want die mens sien na die oë, maar die HERE sien na die hart.

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Toe het Isai Abinadab geroep, en hom voor Samuel laat verbygaan. En hy het gesê, Die HERE het hierdie een ook nie gekies nie.

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Toe het Isai Samma laat verbygaan. En hy het gesê, Die HERE het hierdie een ook nie gekies nie.

Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
So het Isai dan sewe van sy seuns voor Samuel laat verbygaan. En Samuel het tot Isai gesê, Die HERE het hierdie nie gekies nie.

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all [thy] children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
En Samuel het tot Isai gesê, Is dit al die jongmanne? En hy het gesê, Daar bly nog die jongste oor, en kyk, hy wei die skape. En Samuel het tot Isai gesê, Stuur en haal hom: want ons sal nie sit totdat hy hier kom nie.

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he [was] ruddy, [and] withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this [is] he.
En hy het gestuur, en hom gebring. Nou was hy rooi, en daarby van ’n pragtige aangesig, en mooi van voorkoms. En die HERE het gesê, Staan op, salf hom: want dit is hy.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
Toe het Samuel die horing met olie geneem, en hom in die midde van sy broers gesalf: en die Gees van die HERE het van daardie dag af magtig op Dawid gekom. So het Samuel dan opgestaan, en na Rama gegaan.

But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
Maar die Gees van die HERE het van Saul afgewyk, en ‚'n bose gees van die HERE het hom gepla.
15
And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
En Saul se dienaars het tot hom gesê, Kyk nou, ’n bose gees van God pla jou.
16
Let our lord now command thy servants, [which are] before thee, to seek out a man, [who is] a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Laat ons heer nou beveel jou dienaars, wat voor jou is, om ‚'n man te soek wat vaardig is op die harp: en dit sal wees, wanneer die bose gees van God op jou is, dat hy met sy hand speel, en jy sal wel wees.

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring [him] to me.
En Saul het tot sy dienaars gesê, Verskaf my nou ’n man wat goed kan speel, en bring hom na my toe.

Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, [that is] cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD [is] with him.
Toe het een van die dienaars geantwoord, en gesê, Kyk, ek het ’n seun van Isai die Betlehemiet gesien, wat vaardig is in speel, en ’n dapper man, en ’n man van oorlog, en verstandig in sake, en ’n man van gestalte, en die HERE is met hom.

Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which [is] with the sheep.
Daarom het Saul boodskappers na Isai gestuur, en gesê, Stuur my Dawid jou seun, wat by die skape is.

And Jesse took an ass [laden] with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent [them] by David his son unto Saul.
En Isai het ‚'n esel geneem, belaai met brood, en ‚'n sak wyn, en ‚'n bokkie, en dit deur Dawid sy seun na Saul gestuur.
21
And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
En Dawid het by Saul gekom, en voor hom gestaan: en hy het hom baie liefgekry; en hy het sy wapendraer geword.
22
And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
En Saul het na Isai gestuur, en gesê, Laat Dawid, ek bid jou, voor my staan: want hy het genade in my oë gevind.

And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
En dit was so, wanneer die bose gees van God op Saul was, dat Dawid die harp geneem het, en met sy hand gespeel het: so is Saul verkwik, en was wel, en die bose gees het van hom afgewyk.
