Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.
Toe het Nagas die Ammoniet opgetrek, en teen Jabes-Gílead kamp opgeslaan: en al die manne van Jabes het tot Nagas gesê, Maak ’n verbond met ons, en ons sal jou dien.

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this [condition] will I make [a covenant] with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it [for] a reproach upon all Israel.
En Nagas die Ammoniet het tot hulle gesê, Op hierdie voorwaarde sal ek ’n verbond met julle maak, dat ek al julle regteroë uitsteek, en dit as ’n smaad op die hele Israel sit.

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if [there be] no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
En die ouderlinge van Jabes het tot hom gesê, Gee ons sewe dae uitstel, dat ons boodskappers in al die grense van Israel mag stuur: en dan, as daar niemand is om ons te red nie, sal ons na jou uitkom.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
Toe het die boodskappers by Gibea van Saul gekom, en die saak in die ore van die volk vertel: en die hele volk het hulle stem opgehef, en geween.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What [aileth] the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
En kyk, Saul het agter die beeste uit die veld gekom; en Saul het gesê, Wat is met die volk aan die hand dat hulle ween? En hulle het hom die saak van die manne van Jabes vertel.

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.
En die Gees van God het op Saul gekom toe hy daardie woorde gehoor het, en sy toorn is baie aangesteek.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent [them] throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
En hy het ’n paar beeste geneem, en hulle in stukke gekap, en dit deur die hand van boodskappers in al die grense van Israel gestuur, en gesê, Wie ook al nie uitkom agter Saul en agter Samuel aan nie, so sal aan sy beeste gedoen word. En die vrees van die HERE het op die volk geval, en hulle het uitgekoms as een man.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
En toe hy hulle in Besek getel het, was die kinders van Israel driehonderd duisend, en die manne van Juda dertig duisend.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by [that time] the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed [it] to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
En hulle het tot die boodskappers wat gekom het, gesê, So moet julle tot die manne van Jabes-Gílead sê, Môre, teen die hitte van die son, sal julle hulp hê. En die boodskappers het gekom en dit aan die manne van Jabes gewys; en hulle was bly.

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
Daarom het die manne van Jabes gesê, Môre sal ons na julle uitkom, en julle mag aan ons doen alles wat goed is in julle oë.

And it was [so] on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
En dit was so die volgende dag, dat Saul die volk in drie afdelings gestel het; en hulle het in die môrewag in die midde van die leër gekom, en die Ammoniete verslaan tot die hitte van die dag: en dit was so, dat die wat oorgeblewe was, verstrooi is, sodat daar nie twee van hulle bymekaar oorgeblewe is nie.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who [is] he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
En die volk het tot Samuel gesê, Wie is hy wat gesê het, Sal Saul oor ons heers? bring die manne uit, dat ons hulle mag doodmaak.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
En Saul het gesê, Daar moet niemand hierdie dag doodgemaak word nie: want vandag het die HERE verlossing in Israel bewerk.

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.
Toe het Samuel tot die volk gesê, Kom, en laat ons na Gilgal gaan, en die koningskap daar vernuwe.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
En die hele volk het na Gilgal gegaan; en daar het hulle Saul voor die HERE in Gilgal as koning gemaak; en daar het hulle dankoffers voor die HERE geoffer; en daar het Saul en al die manne van Israel baie vrolik gewees.
